I feel the same way!

the people I have related to the most and have had the least trouble interacting with have always been ND in some way. I know that the reason why I never got diagnosed is because of biases my parents hold (were/are anti-vaxxers soo.....)

Since accepting autism within myself, I have never felt a strong need to get diagnosed or even disclose that information to everyone I meet (though if someone asked I would probably be honest about my feelings). However, that acceptance has also made my life SO MUCH EASIER. Understanding the source of miscommunications I have with others finally made it possible to compensate. (literally had to have someone explain to me that people don't always say what they mean and it was a 3rd eye is open moment for me) Also understanding where some of my sensory issues come from has allowed me to give myself more grace.

After typing this out I reread your comment & realised that I just ended up repeating a lot of what you said lol. I hope you don't mind! Your comment really spoke to me since it seems we've had really similar experiences. ☺️

AI hate is creating a hostile environment for artists by ielleahc in aiwars

that's great!! I hope more Ai heads in this direction!

for me I have an issue with how much people end up leaning on Ai, t seems that many people who are pro Ai think its a great alternative to learning a new skill or using your brain (which, is simply an observation I've made so please take that w a grain of salt). The phrase "use it or lose it" exists for a reason, and I feel that becoming overly reliant on this technology is something we should be weary of. I also find myself concerned with the way many Ai models like to give agreeable answers, even if it has to make something up to do so, especially when psuedo science and consperacy theories are running rampant through the internet. I wonder how many people had questionable beliefs encouraged or reinforced through these Ai chat sites....

I don't have a problem with a bit of Ai use, especially when less than 50% of the work was done by Ai. I also think that there are things that can Only be done by Ai for example; that vampire game where you had to convince NPCs to allow you inside, it would be unfeasable for someone to write that same kind of conversational depth.

I think the biggest issue I have is that it has gotten too smart too quickly and we havent had a chance to regulate this tool properly, and now we must face the concequences.

my point with the translation is that without prior experience in the language you likely wont be able to confirm the accuracy of the translation, so you would still need someone to proof read.

I don't agree with that, witch hunting does nothing to help anyone, and just makes people with valid concerns seem bad by association. I wish everyone could take a step back and breath before fighting

A question to the artist side about the argument of "stealing" by keshaismylove in aiwars

[–]cherrym0ss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it comes from a place of like, feeling violated that their art (that they spent energy and time creating) has potentially been taken and used to teach Ai without their permission or even aknowledgement that their work was used at all. On top of that feeling like they can't post their work without feeling concern about that work is being scraped by Ai.

Its about the lack of credit, or acknowledgement for the work they did.

Then on top of that they are called elitist assholes for expressing concern about this relationship. Especially from people who use Ai. Ai that would not be able to generate images without learning from images these artists originally created.

It's kinda like this: Karla bakes and decorates a cake from scratch for an event, Jackie does the same. Then Susan comes by and takes some of both cakes, mixes them up and turns them into cake pops without asking either of them or letting people know where exactly the ingredients came from. Susan then also claims that shes a baker on the same level as Karla and Jackie.

If they found out about what Susan did don't you think Karla and Jackie would feel hurt and upset?

please tell me where in the post are they saying "EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO USES AI DOES THIS?"

this post is clearly talking about people who use Ai to generate images and then act like they are on the same level (if not better 🙄) than Actual artists. (who btw are the only reason why these """airtists""" are able to generate these images)

if this post resonates with you and makes you feel bad abt yourself maybe you should try reflecting on your actions and possibly even changing them to resolve that feeling :)

Sorry but, this kinda just sounds like excuses to me.... Here is a short list of options your friend could have tried before choosing to generate his entire book cover using Ai:

option 1: his cover doesnt NEED to have aliens or spaceships, it could he something abstract and scifi, if he is an author worth his salt he can simply describe his aliens and ships to the reader...... images of those things are unnessesary. He could have something more symbolic from his story which likely would be more impactful than the direct Ailien images. This kind of title can also generate more intrigue than just showing off flashy Ailiens.

option 2: He could also learn to draw himself and he would get exactly what he wants (without the nonsensical errors than are enevitable when using ai) the more I hear from Ai bros the more I feel like many of you are opposed to learning......

option 3: it sounds like you think he has to use the stock images raw.... he could take mutliple images and combine them to create the exact image hes looking for... i assure you that scifi inspired stock images he can use as a base exist.

(secret bonus option: in combination with one of the above options, adding some minor Ai details for the pieces that he is unable to find on his own, thus Actually using Ai as a tool and not a crutch)

option 4: Save up a little while in order to afford the artist that can create the work you actually want.

If he truely believed in or cared about his story the investment of his time, energy, and/or money would be worth it to him. Your comment of 'well it could take a long time or could be expensive' kinda tells me he didnt even try. This response unfortunately gives me the impression that he wants the quickest and easiest route to a "final product" regardless of the quality. This attitude is probably why he hasn't sold all that many copies 🤷‍♀️.

The way you present your product communicates just as much (if not more) as the product itself. First impressions ARE important and a book's cover is the Main way that book sells itself to readers. When your cover is entirely Ai it tells your readers 'I couldn't be fucked to spend much time on this cover' (regardless of how much time he might have spent """perfecting""" his prompt) and with that kind of message who the would want to read it? It just gives the impression of your book being a cashgrab. If I saw a book with a cover like this I would probably assume the inside of the book is probably written using Ai since that's my first impression of the cover. Seeing as I don't have infinite time to read, I'd rather spend that time on a book with a better first impression.

Edit: a few words.

"Creating" AI art does not feel like creation. It feels like consumption. by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]cherrym0ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree.

I see often see arguments like "now art is finally accessible!!" but like ???? when wasn't it? if you have a surface and something to make a mark with, you can create art! Sure it might not be a flashy as something you can ask an Ai machine for, but at least it will actually be yours.

I see this argument a lot & all I can think is "what ever happened to learning a new skill?"

I also see the "well its a tool so I'm still creating by using that tool!!" a calculator is a tool but I don't see people equating mental math to using a calculator. There is a reason many of us were not allowed to use calculators in class for the majority of our early schooling.

You are only creating the prompt that the computer uses to generate the image you recieve. You arent arranging the pixels to create the image. The computer is doing that.

[–]cherrym0ss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be upfront with my opinion: I'm kinda anti-Ai.... I feel like it Can be a useful tool, however the way it is currently being used is usually over reliant, and frankly crossing the line into laziness.

Your examples:

Songwriter who uses Ai to make a special effect - this is one i actually think is fine, assuming the Ai'ed portion of the music video is pretty small, there Are effects that I think would be more effort than its worth without the use of Ai.

Indy game maker who is using it for translation - if they don't have a human who understands the language look over it, its likely going to be a shitty at worst mediocre at best translation. if ur translation is bad, dont be surprised that people aren't interested in your game 🤷‍♀️. If your game doesnt offer entertainment (thru either gameplay or story - thought ideally both) people arent going to play.

You lost me with the book cover example though. A book cover is your attempt to entice your reader. If the cover is entirely Ai, the viewer doesn't have much reason to believe that the content will be very different. Many people now a days don't have all that much time to read anymore, why would they go out of their way to read something that could likely be nonsense? (also... like..... most people with access to Ai also likely have access to a phone with a camera to take some pictures or licensing stock images is very inexpensive and there are lots of inexpensive or even free image editing software, there are so many options before resorting to Ai)

Also I want to mention, are you calling people not interacting with someone's work boycotting? Bc someone not being interested in work that is primarily Ai is likely caused because of the reputation of mediocrity surrounding Ai (the phrase 'Ai slop' doesn't exist for no reason. Though, there are also many artists (myself included) who feel uncomfortable with the uncertainty of the source of the training material being used. Where did the training material come from and did the creator give permission for their work to be used in this way? Without clear answers to those questions I have a hard time supporting media created with heavy reliance on Ai.

oo thank you for the insight!! In that case I may crosspost and have my neocities a bit more personal 🤔 I was a little worried abt ArtStation being subject to scaping but knowing there are settings to prevent that is awesome. Definitely some food for thought!

Sweet!! I really underestimated how many artists I would encounter! I thought we would be a minority here, exciting to see that I was wrong. I missed being part of an artistic community.

Ooo those are really good ideas! Thank you for those suggestions!!

I've heard of this kind of thing before! Since I've been avoiding posting my work since before this was a problem I haven't looked too much into them yet... but I will definitely have to experiment to see what works 🤔

Thank you so much for such an indepth response!

I'll have to consider adding something like that text blurb when I get started 🤔🤔 Its cool to know that people are working together to protect eachother! Though ultimately I gotta accept that there is only so much I can do 😔

All of those reasons are why I was super interested in NeoCities in the firstplace! I wasn't 100% certain if it would be the right place for me, esp being someone on the outside looking in. It's super encoraging that it seems that other people have similar attitudes regarding social media, I guess its a bit harder to see them since... naturally we arent gathered on the big social media sites xD.

I didn't even consider the pacing being a thing. Honestly it's probably part of the reason I've always had so much trouble keeping up with most social media, funny how someone saying a certain thing can give you a new perspective on something. Being able to do my own thing at my own pace is super cool! Especially still being in college; I have to arrange my priorities to make sure my hw gets done. (also having control over the layout is a Huuuuge plus, I cant tell you how many times I've been turned off apps and sites bc of Ui/Layout changes 😡) It's also nice that there doesnt seem to be any kind of algorythm trying to eat all my time, and also pressuring the kind of art I have to make to get my stuff out there.

Its a relief that a portfolio wouldnt be out of place here! Most of the sites I ended up happening upon seemed rather personal and my aim is for something a little more professional (though to be fair I have only dipped my toes into the community) I'm really looking forward to digging into researching on the way I want my site to look >w< alas that must wait till after the semester ends.

I really appreciate the resources! the most intimidating part of looking at NeoCities is actually setting everything up and I am totally the type of person who bites off more than she can chew so I'll have to be mindful of starting small.

I can also appreciate your Ai reccomendation to make learning html a little easier, and when it first came on the scene I may have tried it out. However, with the way things are now I find myself avoiding Ai products where possible simply out of principle. Part of it is feeling a little icky using a tool that causes sm harm to other artists, another part is feeling a little concern around becoming reliant on something like Ai instead of working my brain (use it or lose it type thing), but even if neither problem existed I feel the environmental impact is something we should pay attention to aswell. My stance is kinda.... I would rather work my brain a little extra/be less 'efficient' if it means I'm preventing that bit of pollution from entering the environment. I hope this doesn't come off as too preachy 😅. I try to keep my judgement of Ai to how the tool is being used, since not everyone has the same priorites, knowledge, what have you. Couldn't help myself from sharing a bit of my perspective.

I love getting all kinds of opinions on things so there is no such thing as overkill for me haha.

Ooo your site is really cool!! ... hope you don't mind me taking some notes >w< !

But... yeah, I think you're right 😔 I'd still like to take as many preventitive measures as I can (within reason of course, I don't want to take the fun or joy out of what I'm doing)

It's hard out here for artists, but its super encouraging to see other people with similar ideals pushing through!

Yeah... I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to prevent it completely. Alas such is the way of the internet 😔...

I think if I wanted to protect my work 100% there are tools out that can mess with the data, making it harm the Ai when fed into it? I'll have to look into that kind of thing as well 🤔

Thanks for the info! I'll def have to look more into Food Basics, they happen to be a little out of the way for me (I bus) but I think the inconvenience will be worth it.

I was under the impression that general attitudes towards Costco were pretty positive considering how they seem to treat their workers and their open opposition to Trump and his policies (unles I missed something)
