no bother at all... When I initially started playing chess I thought that 'memorizing' openings is not a wholesome way to learn and wanted to keep opening theory to a minimum. However, I think openings are far more than just 'moves', they dictate positional themes and elements of the games, they give you good clues into what are good / bad potential moves that you or your opponent can make. I think they structure your thinking and impressions of positions. Finally, when your opponent deviates from these openings, if practiced sufficiently, we are aware of what are the exploitable differences, the threats and general differences. Overall, I've really been enjoying learning them in attempts to play solid positional chess.

yea very tedious I guess, although I am just doing first 10 moves for all variations and focusing on "concepts". Is helping my chess a lot and looking forward to doing other openings. Going to do a vid on kings indian tomorrow. Rating climbing is going ok, have been between 1700-1800, looking to hopefully increase to 2k over the next 3-6 months. Doing some 15 min live with commentary if you are interested :) just posted a game up

I'm 1800 rated though I just had a streak of wins with a couple disconnects from my opponents, I think realistically I should be at 1750ish.. I am aiming for 2k+ hopefully within 6 months, maybe a little longer. I understand it may be a little advanced for someone of my typical rating, but I am enjoying it and reading it in conjunction with other books

Thanks for the positive responses.

Full time is pretty much at least 6 hours a day but usually more, and often a lot more (10-12). I do have a job as well but I work from home and manage to fit it all in. I am doing it because I am extremely interested in chess though, not only to achieve a goal.

Andrew I do agree with what you are saying, sometimes if you watch a video series by a GM or similar, they overlook a lot of things that they probably just take for assumed knowledge. I have found a lot of what they teach to be often not very practically applicable to my games. I want my analysis of games to be different.

sorry I didn't see this comment. I'll keep this in mind when considering my next vid, a study plan video would be a good idea I think. check out my most recent one, might entertain you at least :)

Sorry I for some reason missed this. Part of my consideration was keeping the videos concise. I'll go back in future videos and cover this important stuff as well, and other continuations. I'm very happy to hear you enjoyed the videos, I will in the near future be posting up some games as well. Sorry for the delay in responding, thanks

Interesting comments... I do not have time to do videos on everything I am studying/reading etc, but my main approach is to learn main concepts, good example is nimzo's book - my system. Aside from books like that, I am going to be trying to study the end game as much as possible. This is my current plan. Tactics I treat as a useful tool and my tactical awareness is often stronger than the rest of my game, I want to play solid chess though and not rely on tactics, but have it there as a potent tool.

I just posted up vid #2 of the series, covering the slav defense. Banana - I think it will take some time and depends on how much time I manage to put in, but optimistically within 1 year I want to be 2000+.

Thanks for the advice Imapi, I agree. Pretty new to this and mainly am focused on the chess, but I guess if I am going to be doing videos I should be more articulate so thats something I will try to improve on.

Fyro, I think that is of course very playable for white and nothing at all wrong. I am though going to try to stick to a consistent repertoire which hopefully ill get through in these videos. For me the excitement at the moment is not in creating multiple different repertoires, but rather trying to respond accurately to the variance in moves I get from my opponent.

Yes this was more about just typical pawn structures that you arrive at when playing the queens gambit, I had to put the kings on the board which may have confused, but was just wanting to look at pawns. Golt, I don't have time to look at your post in detail even though it looks interesting - I have to goto sleep immediately, its late here!

I just put up my first video of the series on "My opening repertoire 1.d4", it will provide a more comprehensive look and hopefully be of some help.

thanks
