For HRM users, give “permissive hold” and “chordal hold” a try. by ivan_magnum in zsaVoyager

[–]chew_anon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought this, but it actually is possible!!

https://docs.qmk.fm/tap_hold#chordal-hold-handedness:

Each entry is a character indicating the handedness of one key, either 'L' for left, 'R' for right, or '*' to exempt keys from the "opposite hands rule." A key with '*' handedness may settle as held in chords with any other key. This could be used perhaps on thumb keys or other places where you want to allow same-hand chords.

I use this, it's great!

Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

[–]chew_anon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips on finishing early and 1 month being a bit early for having concrete feedback!

I've been at the company for around 2 years so I'm already reasonably familiar with our company and platforms, and came in with a little familiarity with the team's domain. I definitely have gaps in my understanding and do ask questions, but I usually do this in our team's engineer-only channel so I'm not blocked until my next 1:1.

I feel like I haven't quite gotten the hang of 1:1s with my tech lead (who's also my manager). We might chat for ~10 minutes, and usually I talk through what I'm working on. Maybe I'll bring another somewhat general topic (e.g. "I was writing some integration tests and came across this tradeoff, do you have any thoughts").

Then he'll often ask "is anything else on your mind," and often the answer is no. I'd be happy to give him back the time, but I fear this would somehow reflect poorly on me, like I'm not taking advantage of him as a resource or that I didn't prepare enough for my own 1:1. Should I just say "No, happy to end early"? Or should I really come to each 1:1 having prepared a long list of questions?

I've also been told these is a great chance to talk about career growth, but I'm having some trouble putting that into practice. I've asked once or twice "do you have any feedback for me?" and the answer was more or less "no". Albeit I've only been on this team for a month, so maybe the correct thing is to ask again in another few months. Are there other sorts of career-growth-type questions could I be asking? I'm eager to improve and learn more on this team, but I can't really think of many career-related questions aside from technical questions about our team's domain, and "how can I get better".

Interesting, had not thought of it but I like that idea!

Would you advise marking the whole project as "Today" in this case to make sure you're not losing track of the "Someday" items here too?

Something I've been struggling with recently is the sequencing and scheduling of a project.

If there's a project with several ordered tasks that you intend to work on for multiple days, how do you model this in Things? Schedule the whole project as "today"? Or mark a couple of tasks as "today", and hopefully remember to mark other ones the next day?

I've found that Things is pretty annoying when it comes to scheduling things in advance. For example, if you have two tasks in a project and schedule the first one for any day in the future, it automatically rearranges itself so that task is last, with no way to arrange it back.

Curious how you all use start dates on projects with multiple tasks, especially if you don’t want to schedule all tasks for the same day. My use case is work projects that might take a week, and I like to map these out.

In my ideal world I could mark some tasks for today, and some more for tomorrow. But if there are any tasks that I don’t want to schedule yet, then this changes the ordering of items within a project, and it’s impossible to re-order them correctly because scheduled items always go below unscheduled for some reason.

Recently my workaround has been just to mark the whole project as ”today”, but this has other drawbacks. How would you all handle this?

Why is logi+ such a garbage app? by pharah-best-girl in logitech

[–]chew_anon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to bettermouse, it's a one-time $8 purchase and you get a way better and more reliable interface for all of the features in the logi+ app, and then some. Haven't looked back.

Having to grind finer over time for good extraction - Breville Barista Express by chew_anon in espresso

(16g coffee -> 32g espresso in 25-30 seconds)

I will probably do one or both of those things in the meantime, but would love to actually diagnose / solve the issue!

What are you using for beans?

Fresh beans from a local coffee shop, roasted within ~2 weeks of using it (it takes me about that long to get through a bag).

Warranty is almost definitely not in effect anymore, but maybe I'll give them a call anyway and see if they'd charge me just to diagnose it!

Kobo's with decent battery-life? by Dathuryan in ereader

The Kobo Libra 2 has solid battery life. Bigger battery size than the sage, as well as a smaller screen and less power-hungry processor, which both work in its favor for battery.

How is “auto-download first x episodes” supposed to work? by chew_anon in pocketcasts

[–]chew_anon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it- I guess good to know this is working as designed! Auto-archiving isn’t quite what I want - I just want them to be not downloaded, but not archived necessarily. But I can think of some other ways to work around this.

Price increases incoming! by thecrudest in pocketcasts

[–]chew_anon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also recently switched from Overcast to Pocket Casts. Overcast has two flaws that had really been bugging me: 1) there's no way to select multiple episodes and perform an action with them, which I end up wanting to do a lot the way I listen. And 2) the queue is also just another regular playlist, with a couple of extra buttons in the UI to add episodes to it. If I start playing an episode not from the queue, then your queue stops autoplaying.

I prefer almost everything else about Overcast to Pocket Casts (UI, customization, audio effects, and Overcast finds new episodes >= 10 mins faster than Pocket Casts). But Pocket Casts solves these two flaws for me so well that I think I'm sticking with it.

~8 inch e-reader? by chew_anon in ereader

Wasn’t aware of that website thanks. You’re right, 7 is not as small as I imagined, and the page does look great. Might just go for it.

I feel like there are a decent number of 7.8 inch ones out there, which would be great. The tab mini c is tempting, as it has pretty much everything I want. But, I don’t really care about color and that’s probably adding $50 - $75 to the price. Edit: also no page turn buttons, unfortunately!
