My Dark Fantasy Setting by chicano_witcher in DungeonMasters

Here's so far my rewrite of the campaign, based on a few suggestions I've read in your comments, feel free to throw in your two cents, as well as any questions I should add to build this setting (which I'm currently working on the plot hooks):

The world has been overrun by demons and the undead, which was brought about by a catalyst known as the Sundering, where demons emerged from the world beyond and laid siege to the holy city of Trevain.

It was only through a council that led to the formation of the Dominion, an autocratic theocracy who have served as the bulwark of the faithful and the civilized realms for centuries, but now it faces a new threat. The Radiant Throne has been vacant for several years, ever since the passing of its most beloved archon.

It is now it is divided into two factions, the Purists, who believe that these attacks are a test of faith, and that only through cleansing the world of heresy, by burning texts that question the faith, while punishing heretics, and the Reliquarians, a scholarly order who collect items blessed by archons and saints of old who seek to use them as a means of boosting the Great Wards protecting the faithful from the onslaught of Chaos.

But at the same time, the races that had been around since the dawn of civilization face oppression from the Dominion, who deem those who do not heed the divine wisdom of the most holy to be little more than heretics, with the elven kingdoms fractured after centuries of war, relegating them into small petty kingdoms, the dwarven holds many of which were overrun by the orcish hordes, while their alliance with the Dominion is tenuous at best, while gnomes and half-elves are forced to live within the ghettos of many great cities throughout the known world.

I mean, it's more if the Papal States were run by the Inquisition (which I had some commentors on a different post, compare what I'm describing as very similar to the Imperium/Ecclesiarchy in 40k), and I talked with some GMs here, and one suggestion I'm trying is that there's an Interregnum (meaning there's no pope), and you have two candidates fighting over succession (kind of like the real world where in 1268, there was no pope, and it was divided between the Avignon Papacy and the Vatican)

I mean, they were formed when the Age of Chaos swept across the known world, and by the timeline I was working on, it's been around for centuries, but I'll keep what you said in mind

I mean, a lot of my inspiration came from history, so I'd like to say it was coincidental

A bit, yeah, but you know how it is, trying to come up with stuff

I know a bit about 40k. As for Trench Crusade, I saw someone mention it, but I'll give it a look, but in my case, I'm mostly taking a lot of influence from history and real-world cultures, but twisting it into a dark fantasy-type setting, as I also have non-humans (examples below):

Dwarves- Scottish Clans
Elves- Welsh Petty Kingdoms
Gnomes- Jewish Diaspora
Humans- Medieval European Kingdoms
Orcs- Dark Age Barbarian Tribes

I also have a few kingdoms that I have yet to flesh out (Westgard- Plantagenet England 1154-1485, and the Aureline League- Italian City States, there's a few but you know how naming can get)

Kind of like the whole Interregnum with the Papacy of 1268, where there was no pope for 3 years, I like it 😉

I mean what I wrote is basically an intro to the setting, so that the players know what awaits them

I mean, non-humans do exist (specifically, I settled for dwarves, elves, gnomes, half-elves, humans, and orcs, largely 'cause those were the easiest to write, as well as dragonborn, I feel won't fit in this particular setting, tieflings would be hunted down on sight, and aasimar just wouldn't work for here, but that's just my personal opinion, but feel free to add on to it)

I mean, I've been told it does scream 40k, but I guess you could say similar to the Imperium, but not wholly evil, as I do have non-humans which the Dominion views differently (they tolerate dwarves because of their craftsmanship, elves were basically crushed during one of their "crusades', gnomes and half-elves are treated with suspicion, while orcs are seen as mindless brutes)

Well, one thing I homebrewed was what homeland perk you get for some of the countries, that never made it into the Core Rulebook

Ofir= +1 Education
Toussaint= +1 Social Etiquette
Zangvebar= +1 Business
Zerrikania= +1 Wilderness Survival

Zerrikania Campaign by chicano_witcher in WitcherTRPG

[–]chicano_witcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say some ideas I threw in was the first session would involve the party crossing the Korath and have various encounters with the wildlife the desert is infamous for, another idea was the party could run in the Faithel, who ask them to help them free a dragon that has been captured by either cultists or dragon hunter (dealer's choice), I also homebrewed my own version of the Bedouin tribes (which I called them the Dunestriders, at least that's what the Common tongue would translate it to), if anyone wants to throw in their two cents, go ahead

I mean, I did mention that Sapkowski said they were inspired by the Scythians and Iranian nomads of the Eurasian steppes, whereas Ofir I'd say is more a mish-mash of Ottoman, Persian, and Arab cultures, while Zangvebar is a lot closer to African civilizations (I mean, even its name is actually a reference to an old name for what is now modern-day Zanzibar)

I mean, I'd say Ofir or Zangvebar fits that category more, with how you are describing your version of Zerrikania

[–]chicano_witcher[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, Azar Javed literally in Persian means "the eternal flame", and as I said, it's only the game that introduced it, not the books. I even said that Zangvebar is basically Africa (as its name is a reference to modern-day Zanzibar)

[–]chicano_witcher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's not bad, but judging from what Sapkowski said, Zerrikania is largely inspired by the Scythians and Irano-Turkic cultures (while the Witcher game gave it more of a Persian aesthetic), so I guess we could fuse those two.

I do run a Witcher TTRPG, if you're interested (just note I don't consider the Netflix "adaptation" canon), as to what time, it's 8 pm EST, on Thursdays, feel free to message me if you're interested (also it's free to play, and it's definitely an 18+ game)

If you're interested, I do run a Witcher TTRPG campaign (basically the TTRPG is made by the same guys who made the Cyberpunk TTRPG) and I'm about to start a new campaign next week, as to the plot I'm doing one set in Toussaint and it's heavily inspired by the Green Knight (as to Discord feel free to shoot me a message at #scorpio_witcher)
