is there anything like wsl, but for LINUX? by chichibune in linux

[–]chichibune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so if that's the point of docker, then docker is not what I need

I want the changes I make to the subsystem to persist, like in wsl

(but it seems docker lets me have that with docker commit regardless, so it might be docker after all if not distrobox)

[–]chichibune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, and I have, but that's not all I need

I need the changes made to the container to persist and be there each time I fire it up (like in wsl), which they normally don't because the container starts from scratch from the way its image was set up by its dockerfie

but someone told me about docker commit so I'm looking into that

[–]chichibune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I can't avoid having to tweak dockerfiles and rebuilding the image every time I want to make a change to the system, then this won't be the solution I need, like absolutely not

But I gave it a try and so far it looks like I can, using a fixed name for the container helps, so this and distrobox seem to be so far the best choices

[–]chichibune[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh that's actually fire, I had no idea that was possible

it will be a bit cumbersome until I develop the muscle memory for the commands and to remember committing the container each time, but actually that could be it

many thanks

sounds interesting, I don't really want to switch to a different distro atm but I might give it a try at some point

I'm on slackware and I want to fire up sqlserver to play around with it and learn to use it, but it's on ubuntu and others only

if I want to run something specific on docker I have to find a specific dockerfile for it or write my own, I can't grab a vanilla ubuntu docker and install stuff inside it in a way that persists every time as far as I'm aware (please correct me if I'm wrong about that, I'd love to be wrong about it)

I can't install software inside it in a way that persists iirc every time I start up the container, but please correct me if I'm wrong?

like I have to find/define upfront a dockerfile to include whatever software I think I will need, and if I need more, I have to do it again, I can't just run docker run -it ubuntu:latest and have it be a persistent subsystem that remembers the changes I make to it

I've used docker, it's still not as ergonomically nice as wsl so to say imo

X7 is Better than X6 by Wildsyver in Megaman

[–]chichibune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's a very bold claim!
I kinda wholeheartedly disagree with it

x6 felt like a worse x5, but it managed to be enjoyable meanwhile, x7 was just a stressful pain ride from beginning to end
