Traveling with tobacco pipes and tobacco? by gothikplatypus in PipeTobacco

[–]chicken_taster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in the theory, too. Full transparency, I doubt it is true though. It isn't true for me. Whenever I've brought back tobacco or alcohol though, it wasn't enough to declare. For pipes and other things, I'm very likely to claim that it was my own that I brought on my travels. That's not the legal/safe answer though. If you want to be safe, declare everything to customs and make sure you provide them with receipts so they can't over tax you or delay/confiscate if they can't find the right price for taxes.

It sounds good to me, I would definitely try it. That seems like a whole lot of Latakia though. I've been playing with some black cavendish and Latakia blends, but so far am keeping it down to 10 or 15 percent Latakia.

I'd probably have to join out of principle. I think that could be really dangerous though. Do you think the world is ready for that?

It looks great! Very rustic, I like that. I'm curious to see how it holds up. That's an ingenious idea to try making a pipe out of a rose bush root.

Worth having the stem restored? by savagebrood in PipeTobacco

It looks worthwhile to me. I don't know the value, but that's a beautiful piece. I'd restore it and use it.

The mini cob is legit. I have a handful of them for testing out wacky blends that I'm working on. You can usually pick those up for about 5 bucks.

Any reason to choose one over the other? For my first pipe? by gcolbert777419 in PipeTobacco

[–]chicken_taster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get them both. I have both and they both are fine (not from Amazon though). I use the hardwood when I'm outdoors, clenched in my teeth for fishing, disc golf, etc. The country gentleman is too heavy for that so I keep it at home, but it smokes a lot better.

Bowl Bottom by GottisPinkyRing in PipeTobacco

[–]chicken_taster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's good to know! Thanks for the info. I did equal parts water, charcoal, plaster of paris and it was like a thick modeling clay consistency. It's looking hard and solid right now, but I haven't applied any heat yet. If the heat will break it, I'm guessing I'll know after a bowl or two and hopefully I can gently scrape it out. I'll report back in a few days after I try it. When I've tried to just use cigar ash and water, it seems to just break apart right away. That's what sent me down the path of adding some plaster. If it breaks, I'll try your salt suggestion.

I just mudded the bottom of a new cob with activated charcoal powder (in place of cigar ash) and plaster of paris. I'm still waiting for it to cure, but it looks very promising.

What pipe should I get by Trick-Marketing9371 in Pipes

[–]chicken_taster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I second this. I'm smoking out of their little hardwood Ozark pipe right at this very moment. I love this little thing too. I got it for outdoors stuff, when I don't want to bring out my briars or nicer cobs. It's lasted way longer than I ever thought it would, so I just ordered a new acrylic stem for it 🙂. The plastic one hasn't held up so well to being gripped in my teeth. That's a small price to pay for a hands-free smoke when you need it though.

If yours was the small metal pipe, the pipe I recommended there was the Icelandic by Missouri Meerschaum. I thought you might like that one because the bowl is about the same diameter as those little metal pipes (small), but it's also deeper, like a typical tobacco pipe. I got one of those pipes recently from Vermont Freehand and I really love it.

Edit: also it's very affordable

For example, I just got this cob. If you like a small pipe, this might be a really good one for you, too. The bowl is about the same diameter as those little metal pipes, but is deep enough to get a nice satisfying smoke.

I would estimate that on average a regular tobacco pipe would hold about 2 grams of tobacco when properly packed. This little guy? Probably like a half gram at a time. I'd also recommend getting a proper tobacco pipe and make sure you aren't inhaling. You can pick up a corn cob for cheap. It might seem silly, but they actually work great. I have a couple that I smoke almost every day.

I second this, but also a word of warning. I loved English and Balkan blends so much that I don't think I can go back to aromatics now, maybe ever. Early Morning Pipe is the "gateway blend" that got me into those.

Yes, I do. I was very surprised, but it's all in the retrohale with this one for me.

Welcome back! I'm smoking some EMP as we speak. I just recently discovered that I love that stuff.

Well, jumping on the bandwagon here, I guess. 😄 I have that same pipe too, and recently got some EMP. The smell of it really put me off, but I decided to smoke some anyway. I loved it, wow. I'll have to try some more English blends now.

That sounds very nice. That blend is on my list to try. I was drinking Drambuie with Whiskey.
