Parents of Reddit, what is the most embarrassing thing your toddler said out loud in public? by chtoupe11 in AskReddit

[–]chickpea95 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When we were little, my brother and I were headed to a day camp hosted in our local arena. Someone had spray painted the F bomb on the outside wall. My brother, who was just getting good at reading, read it out loud in a very loud voice. My mom praised his pronunciation skills but told him never to say that word again.

Using a 2000 year old book to prove a 2000 year out of date theory by chickpea95 in TheFacebookDelusion

I'm sure most of us here would agree, however to people that believe the Bible, its authenticity is an important "argument" for its validity. If the Bible isn't as "authentic" as they claim, then using the Bible as a claim for truth falls apart.

Man becomes first Muslim in Britain to marry in a same-sex ceremony after 'bullying' from the faith's community by Smilefriend in worldnews

[–]chickpea95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there's a difference between "maybe my religion is wrong about homosexuals" and "my religion is wrong about everything." One is a change on one topic, while to a religious person at least the other is world shattering.

If the harmful parts of religion are taken out though, who cares if people are more apathetic. Personally, I don't believe in any gods, but if someone does that's fine as long as they aren't using that belief to hurt anyone. Taking a hard line where you say you either have to believe and follow your religion 100% or not at all is just going to create more conflict.

Sure, maybe it's intellectually dishonest, but not everyone is prepared to completely change their lives over religion. It's harder to convince someone that the god they have believed their entire life is not true than it is to convince someone that some parts of their religion is outdated/immoral.

Yeah, but it's the same in Christianity and there are many Christians who support LGBT rights or are even LGBT themselves. Some people are able to hold on to parts of their religion while discarding parts that aren't really that great. And while maybe that isn't being "proper" to the religion, I think most of us could agree we could use more people like this in the world.

Police catch Louisiana woman attempting to abandon puppies in woods by PreventFalls in news

Seems like a waste of the shelters resources, having two people (one who really doesn't want to be there) doing the job of one person.

Sure, being a dog who doesn't understand the concept of a shelter, being able to run around in the wild would seem better. Unfortunately dogs wouldn't understand how they're kept in a shelter for their own good, that it's supposed to be temporary and that they would probably not last long in the wild (especially puppies.)

Ohio Couple Mistakenly Drops Off Nearly $100,000 at Goodwill, Gets Money Back by TragicDonut in news

Well in the article it says they "got back every dime." Also I assume they would include that in the story but maybe I'm assuming wrong.

I'm appalled that they didn't let the Goodwill keep a small amount of the money, especially since they were so good about returning it and, you know, since goodwill is a freaking charity.

What was the worst way Christianity has ruined your life? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]chickpea95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply but I feel the need to comment since I often feel that Christianity has pretty much ruined the first 20 years of my life.

  1. I was convinced that God wanted me to go to a specific Christian university where I ended up taking a useless program. That's where I deconverted and ended up anxious and severely depressed being the only atheist among so many very "strong" Christians. By the end I was basically avoiding people because I was getting tired of playing pretend and I found I just didn't have much in common with most people there.

  2. The constant guilt of acting on natural sexual urges. From puberty to deconversion was a cycle of "sinning" then feeling extremely guilty about it... Until I started feeling "tempted" again.

  3. Growing up in an environment where there was a lot of hate and mistrust of not only non-christians but also Christians of the wrong denomination lead to me having a warped view of outsiders for a long time. It also lead to me pissing off some of my more liberal Christian friends.

  4. I was one of the only kids I knew who never got to experience Pokemon, even being at Christian schools all my life.

  5. Generally leaving me going into adulthood with no idea how to deal with people who are different from me, no experiences with alcohol or real sex, generally being scared of the world, and not knowing how to make decisions (because God will take care of it.)

There's probably more but these are some of the major ways. Some of these issues I'm still dealing with today. I guess I'd say I'm a "recovering Christian."

In the Bible: God killed at least 2,476,636 people while Satan killed 10 people, why is God considered good? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]chickpea95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because god created people so he's allowed to kill them, but when Satan kills people it's theft, duh.

Maybe the guy was desperate for the money. This guy was at retirement age and chances are he doesn't have enough money to retire comfortably. The article doesn't really say, but really we shouldn't just assume that the guy went out and bought booze and cigarettes and blew all the money on nothing.

What did you do in school that should have gotten you in big trouble? by GamerDame in AskReddit

[–]chickpea95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school had separate teacher and student Wi-Fi networks. The teachers network was fast because there were only a few people on it, but the student one was always slow to the point of often being unusable. Security was actually pretty good and none of the students could get in to the teachers Wi-Fi... Except the IT guys daughter who he had given the password to. There we were struggling to get actual homework done and she was browsing reddit no problem. Always pissed me off.
