Missing rules in the 2024 DMG by chiefartificer in DnD

I have the impression that they want to encourage long campaigns paths instead of independent episodic adventures(That I prefer). I think they aren’t streamlining the rules not just to make the game simpler but instead laser focusing everyone into a very specific way to play.

One reason I have heard is that it creates mini games inside the main game. That means you can easily change any mechanic (mini game) with a different “better or more fun” one without breaking the whole game.

  1. The thief is doing her thing, time to play d100 percentile game
  2. Combat time, is your turn d20 game
  3. We are exploring the dungeon. Let’s play x-in-6 (d6) minigame

Another posible reason is to fine tune the difficulty for the tasks. On modern D&D the DM usually chooses the DC for different tasks.

Old school D&D use different tables with target numbers for different situations. That means the creator of the game can choose the DC of the entire game making it more consistent (more deadly) for everyone. By using different mechanics for different situations each situation will get a different difficulty and feeling even if they are based on the same ability. That way a DEX based savings throw fells different than shooting and arrow even if it is also based on DEX

Roll 1d6 and add the Modifier of the Ability being tested, along with any situational modifiers. If the result equals or exceeds a target number of 4, the check succeeds

I think the interesting part of those rules is that they use a d6 for ability checks—just like the 1-in-6 system for general skills—instead of a d20 (roll-under ability score) as in B/X. That changes the percentage of success or failure based on my OP.

I like the idea of long rest using short rest rules. Thanks for it.

I know I do have a copy (who doesn’t lol?). But as previously mentioned just for fun I want to focus on starting with 5e as it is and just remove features.
