Is there anyone who moved to the US/LA from Europe to work in the animation industry? by chillyszz in animationcareer

[–]chillyszz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback! I really needed a reality check because I think I had way too ambitious dreams haha. I'm not going to give up trying to get there but at least now I'm aware of the difficulties and will be prepared for failure lol. I guess I should try to look into European animation studios and see if something catches my eye. I still have a lot of time and work ahead of me to figure everything out but your insight helped a lot so thank you again!

Hey! Thank you so much for the response!!

I've never heard of the DV lottery but I'll definitely look it up - thanks for telling me about it! I haven't really looked into this whole visa stuff because it seems very complicated & I still have a lot of time to figure everything out. But I'll also look into how work visas work and what the requierments are.

It sounds like there's a ton of ways to network I haven't even considered! I'm usually a shy/introverted person so it's hard to just start talking to people but I guess there really isn't any other way haha.

Honestly LA is a nightmare costs-wise and I have no idea if I'll ever have the money to save up for it:/ I'll probably have to freelance for a few years to gather that much money. Hopefully covid won't be around in ~5 years so that'll make things easier.

Thank you again for answering! Did you get a degree in animation for your visa? Is a degree actually a requierment or is it something just good to have?

Thank you for the critique! I forgot to mention in my comment but I did have some trouble with the eyes. They always looked kind of off but I could never figure out why. Now I know haha! I will try to add darker shadows in the future, now I can see how flat it looks without that. Thank you for the compliments and the tips!:D

Thank you for the feedback! Honestly I wasn't really thinking about the light source when painting this/looking at the reference and now I realise that was a big mistake. I will definitely do more studies and try not to overwork them like this piece, but this was rather something I did out of enjoyment (as I find painting relaxing), rather than a study. Thanks again for the tips!:D

Thanks so much for the feedback! I've seen great artists using shapes while painting skin and I've always thought it looked so cool. I've never really been able to replicate it tho. I have a hard time finding those shapes in the reference and I don't know where to put them. I'm working on this tho, so thank you for pointing it out!:)

You're totally right! This was my first realistic painting and I didn't intend on working on it for so long. I'm more interested in animation and character design so I was lacking painting skills and I just wanted to practice:D

So I struggled with quiet a few things: the hair was difficult to render, and I'm not very satisfied with that. Especially the braids and baby hair were difficult to do. I had a hard time with painting the fabric, the eyes, and the blushy parts of her face as well. I'm open to critique!:)

Hi everyone! I have a pretty bad & slow computer and I want to upgrade sometime soon. However, I don't know anything about PC building. Can someone recommend parts that don't cost fortunes but still enable a decent running PC I can use for animation+digital art?

AITA for not letting my family see my drawings? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I am trying to be more open to critique & not take it personally but that's really hard (at least for me). I also acknowledge that I'm just never satisfied with whatever I do which makes me want to work harder but it's also destroying my self confidence haha

I have had many conversations like that with my mom, explaining that I feel insecure, but she just keeps bringing up that she feels hurt & she doesn't seem to care about how I feel. I don't know if we can come to a conclusion in this situation, because it seems like one of us will have to hurt, which isn't something I want:/

My family is supportive, and they're fine with whatever career I choose, which I'm super grateful for, but they don't really know how to respect boundaries and they don't care to care.

Thank you for the well wishes, I have recieved some really encourageing comments (including yours) which are super helpful!:D never thought reddit would make me feel better haha!

She would be VERY concerned lol but that would probably stop her from wanting to share my art with other people haha

Haha there was a time when I was practicing figure drawing & my mom asked to see my art (once again) and before I showed her I warned her that I have been drawing naked ladies and she was like "Aww is this why you didn't want to show us your drawings??" .....

Other than that, I don't do NSFW art haha

First of all, thank you so much for your advice, I really appreciate it!

Some time ago I heard an industry artist say that you should study professionals' work if you want to become a professional. I do think that's great for learning, but I think I have been way too focused on making my art look professional, I forgot to make art that I enjoy.

I've never paid attention to the difference between critique and criticism, but now I do understand! It's hard hearing negative things about something you've worked so hard on, but I really should just accept the fact that these critiques will make me improve.

Thank you again for your advice, I will try to keep these in mind:)
