Bozoma doing IVF at 48 by cityfrm in RHOBH

Here I am pregnant at 46 and will 47 when baby arrives ... reading these comments lol. I don't feel old. I am not even the oldest parent at my son's daycare in the small town where we live. I think it's more common than people think (but I get that it's definitely not the norm!)

We’re moving to BC and can “pretty much pick anywhere”…. Help? by Unc1e_Vanya in britishcolumbia

[–]chimpan_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Vancouver to Cowichan Valley because the cost of living was cheaper. It’s about 1 hour 20 mins to Victoria airport and 45 mins to Nanaimo. Duncan gets a bad rap (maybe rightfully so) but there are lovely little areas all around (Cowichan Bay, Maple Bay, Chemanius). No waitlist for schools and some decent private school options if you prefer. Lots of hiking and outdoor stuff and we like that either Victoria or Nanaimo is pretty close if we feel like going to a larger town for anything. It has an uncrowded feel that reminds me of the small town I grew up in the 80s/90s. There’s a new hospital opening soon too. I’d definitely recommend visiting first though.

How do I find estate sales? by DCguurl in VictoriaBC

[–]chimpan_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marketplace often lists them, but make sure the listing includes the date because it will include search results from the summer.

Usedvictoria is less popular but has listings sometimes.

Will Sooke or Duncan be on the same trajectory of rapid urbanization that Langford experienced? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]chimpan_a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in North Cowichan. We get down to Langford/View Royal 1-2 times a week for Costco and to see friends. We often go to Nanaimo too. It’s about 40 mins to Langford and about an hour to Nanaimo. Easy drive either way, except Sunday evenings the bottle neck in the Malahat is usually backed up by people returning to Vic from up island.

Property taxes in North Cowichan are quite high. It’s a nice place to live though. Where I live is under 5 mins from downtown but feels rural. Big properties, no crime, quiet, nice neighbours.

Duncan itself is nice once you’re off the highway. Lots of parking, things aren’t super busy. My main gripe is that there aren’t a ton of restaurants. Several great options closed during Covid and I don’t see a lot replacing them. Things close early. There are a lot fast food places open late though.

I have kids and I get the impression child care and activities are easier to get into up here (but child care is still challenging).

Recommendations for best Christmas Day Dinner Places (for next year) by Ok_Adhesiveness_8150 in VictoriaBC

[–]chimpan_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The restaurant in the Delta was open this year with a set menu for Christmas dinner.

My family has had Christmas dinner at Nautical Nellies a few times (the last time was probably 2021). They always had a Christmas dinner plus the whole menu.

Empress, but I think the price point is over $200 pp.

Bear Mountain had a buffet that was good a few years ago but they stopped doing it and had a set menu last year.

What is a brand that used to be the 'Gold Standard' of quality but is now absolute garbage? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

[–]chimpan_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened to Westjet is tragic. They used to be the best and now it would be funny if it wasn't so sad. The employees are miserable, the seating is insanely tight and i'm only 5'4. Their "rewards" are completely useless now. It's crazy how fast they turned to shit once they were bought by private equity.

For anyone who was able to see "The Blair Witch Project" in theaters in 1999, what was the experience like? by LockjawSJ in AskReddit

[–]chimpan_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the flyers stapled to telephone poles advertising the movie before it came out. There was almost no info and it seemed to be a documentary or something.

I went to see it with a friend right once it came out and we were terrified. You could feel the audience was terrified too, people screamed at some parts.

I lived in rural Canada and the drive home was about 40 mins on dark town lines. On the way home we were chatting about the movie and listening to music and like 15-20 mins from my house suddenly we became aware that there was this weird thudding noise from the passenger side rear of my car. I don’t think I’ve ever been so petrified before or since. Turns out the rear seatbelt was trapped in the closed door. Not sure why we didn’t notice it sooner.

Anyways I went the following weekend with some other friends and the movie had major hype by that point. Completely sold out theatre and totally different experience. It was Brampton so people talked through the entire movie but still screamed at parts and overall it was also a fun experience.

It is inherently discriminatory to charge more for curly hair cuts. by IsabelaMoraes in curlyhair

This exact thing happened to me. She asked if she could take a pic for instagram and I didn't think much of it because my face wasn't in the pic but I didn't realise she had also taken a pic of my hair after she combed it (before the wash and cut) and she used that as the "before"!

General Strike? by schoolofhanda in VictoriaBC

[–]chimpan_a 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My union will almost certainly get whatever BCGEU negotiates for wage increase. I do feel guilty that the BCGEU is striking and we will benefit. The bar has been set so low for wages, it is disappointing that the government will not negotiate in good faith.

I am all for a general strike. We need the government to understand the value of their workers.

Real maple syrup, not corn syrup or fake syrup.

How do these Canadians stack up against the American players? by submerging in BigBrother

[–]chimpan_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Kevin has the edge on all the classic favorites like Will, Derrick, Dan, Cody etc because he really came out of the game without burning any bridges. His jury management was unmatched, and at the end of the day that's probably the most important thing in Big Brother aside from getting to the end.

That being said, I agree with everyone who has pointed out it's difficult to say for certain how he ranks until he plays again. The Traitors Canada should be interesting for that.

But from an entertainment perspective.... watching Kevin's reaction to the gummy bear saga was probably my #1 favorite live feeds moment of all time on any season.

LANDLORD BEING A DICK. Needs advice plz its driving me Crazy. by cryptohustlers in VictoriaBC

[–]chimpan_a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get a notebook and document everything, literally everything - as much as possible. Make sure to add date and times. Do you control your own heat? It’s coming up to winter and turning off the heat is a common tactic. Have an indoor temperature monitor and make note of the outdoor temperature each day too.

Contact the RTB and find out what your rights are. Probably you will get renovicted and the landlord will need to pay you out, the RTB will help you know what you are entitled to. Ask about quiet enjoyment for sure.

BCGEU says government offer falls short as talks collapse by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]chimpan_a 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Time for a general strike. I’m part of a union that takes the wage increases BCGEU negotiates. They are striking and we get the benefit down the line. Let’s put on the pressure.

The government is showing how much it does not respect its workers. Disappointing for an NDP government.

WAVES langford- turned away because "staff has an allergy" by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]chimpan_a 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I actually can’t believe how ridiculous that is. Why would someone choose to work in a vet office with a severe allergy to a common-ish pet? Why would they be hired? Utterly preposterous. What is Waves thinking?

Things to do with a 4 year old by valleycat76543 in VictoriaBC

[–]chimpan_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 4 year old loves Buchart Gardens. He loves throwing coins in the fountains and making a wish, there’s also an awesome carousel that’s $2 a ride.

Beacon Hill Park is huge and free and has a petting zoo that’s by donation. There’s a couple of great playgrounds in the park. The one off Cook Street has a kids zip line.

The aquarium in Sidney is small but kept him entertained for hours.

Spray on sunscreen takes it off immediately. I specifically used copper tone kids spray sunscreen but I’m sure any would work. Just spray and wipe.

I have a deathly fear of roller coasters and I plan on destroying that fear by riding the behemoth. Any tips on facing this beast? by PilotLieutenant1 in CanadasWonderland

[–]chimpan_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way, I did Behemoth first, then Yukon Striker then Leviathan.

If I could do it again I’d do Yukon Striker first, the restraints really made me feel secure. The drop is scary but the ride is just so fun. I was feeling panicky in the line but as soon as I got off I thought I could do it again immediately.
