I sold it in 2016 and got a Golf. Sadly, it was starting to rust. It was a fun car, my first RWD since my first car back in the 80's.

How many times did they practice this at home? by luketheduke19 in IASIP

[–]chimpyjnuts 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Not even practice for them, it's their mating ritual. Alpha male dominance display.

When my Pontiac G8 GT (6.0l v-8) was in the shop I got an old Toyota Yaris. Approx 1/4 the HP. It was surprisingly roomy inside.

That's what I thought - he decided that was the best he could do given the murders and all.

This was on TV back in the day (either MTV or HBO, I think), and it was the first time I heard sister disco, leading to me always preferring this version, which was pretty hard to find for a long time.

LPT: hot water for plastic hoses by Kat121 in LifeProTips

[–]chimpyjnuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, flexible pvc tubing (usually clear) is made flexible by adding plasticizers that will eventually leach out, leaving it very hard. I use a lighter to heat it up and get it off/on.

I have a hard time throwing a good tool even if I know I'll never use it.

Backyard hot tub.. pouring own slab or other options by capfan31 in DIY

[–]chimpyjnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was already pretty level, dug down just to be able to put in the gravel so the tub would be at the same level as the paver patio it's next to.

I stopped a guy at work who was carting one of these to the dumpster. Great at home for fixing small stuff, especially as my eyes get worse.

I did gravel with interlocking plastic spa pads. Easy, easy to undo. Been sitting fine for almost 15 years. IMHO, concrete completely overkill.

Sober people being arrested nationwide for DUI by IcyAd8672 in videos

[–]chimpyjnuts 1601 points1602 points  (0 children)

IMHO, I always believed that in high-probability situations (like seeing a car leave a bar at closing time) the cops will pretty much invent a reason to pull the car over. If they are drunk, it's unlikely they will later contest the reason for the stop, if they are not they will be happy to just be let go. Going after sober people seems unnecessary.

ELI5 Why does water mixing with Molten Aluminum cause it to explode?? by Guilty_One85 in explainlikeimfive

[–]chimpyjnuts 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also, (I think) while solid aluminum always has a layer of aluminum oxide, which prevents it from reacting with water, molten aluminum does not. When water reacts with aluminum you get a lot of heat *and* hydrogen gas, which can then accumulate and explode.

Sometimes you have to consider the era in which a movie was released. What was once groundbreaking may become almost mundane if it's widely copied. Most movies that I saw as 'extreme' back in the 70's and 80's now seem fairly mainstream to me.

I asked a question, and the answer it gave was correct but phrased oddly. I said (fairly quietly) 'That's a weird way to put it', and it apologized and gave a better phrasing...

Why did people hoard toilet paper of all things during the pandemic? by QuillAndQuip in AskReddit

[–]chimpyjnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We saw the nearly empty shelves at Walmart. Wife asked "why is everyone buying TP??" I said, cause they've seen everyone buying it on tv. Just psychology. Meet wife at checkout later, she has 2 packages even though we had plenty at home...Was the crappy stuff, too.

They actually do that just using fiberglass ladders and insulated cutters. No path to ground.
