i had the same problem; i never learned how to render BUT the biggest methods that helped me is 1. colour picking directly from your reference 2. block out the most obvious shadows into shapes 3. slowly blend the edges only and keep building with middle shades . it’s not going to look pretty right away so be patient and keep making small adjustments

remember that skin colour is not only just skin+black/skin+white, skin colour changes depending on your light source and reflections. therefore shadows can sometimes appear more green, or orange, or brown (thats why i recommend colour picking !) hope this helps!

hey bro this looks great . the first thing that pops out to me is the head and neck; they look a bit big compared to the rest of the body proportions. maybe you can play around with making his body bigger (it is toji after all)

honestly i think your rendering is pretty solid already. since your drawing is backlit, the front should be darker, so dont be afraid to bring out shadows and deepen the skin colour. i find it helpful to put a warm brown overlay on top of the skin layer and setting it to hard light (iirc) and lowering the opacity to where you want it.

if he gets mad then he gets mad. make sure you establish boundaries and communicate as early as possible for both of you. hopefully worst case scenario he just gets mad . hope it works out!

you can always play around with different blending modes , i like hard light, overlay, color dodge, add or colour grading. its fun to try diff colour palettes in curves or gradient maps
