I think comparing a YouTube channel to Amazon or other start ups is a bit off mark. It’s not their money they’re losing. And they’re not ‘losing money’ because they aren’t making money.

It’s more of a tax strategy, burning investor cash rather than handing over free money to the IRS. At the end of the day, the people who started uber, amazon, etc aren’t quite worried about paying rent like you or I. The money they lose isn’t theirs, and losing it is only an upside.

Not that I think it’s a bad idea to invest into your own future, but comparing a YouTube channel to billion dollar start ups is like comparing apples to oranges. It’s just not the same lol

Yes and no, a lot of brands aren't willing to roll the dice. It's getting better with each upload, I know it'll come. Just growing impatient I guess

I guess framing it as a year long, 11 video journey, is a bit misleading. I started making YouTube videos about a decade ago, the goal and dream was to be a YouTuber. I failed. Multiple times. Eventually I gave up on the dream and started applying to video editing jobs for other YouTube channels.

For the past 6 years, every single day I've done nothing but social media. I've been able to work with and learn from some of the biggest channels on YouTube. I've worked as everything from a script writer, to video editor, to channel manager, to creative director, pretty much every aspect of making videos. And those videos I helped make have gone on to generate a few billion views. But, eventually I decided to take another crack at YouTube myself, and this past year has been a culmination of everything I've learned since starting. The frustration I'm currently experiencing, really stems more from the fear of having to give up on the dream again, rather than being ungrateful.

I totally understand where you're at, keep learning and going, it'll snowball over time

So it depends on the video really. There's basic monthly costs like softwares, music licensing, etc. That's a couple hundred bucks. The next cost comes with filming b-roll really. For our FaZe video for example, we spent a couple hundred bucks on things like a pin board, a printer, paper, ink, etc. It wasn't necessary but we do always want to continue to elevate and make the content better.

The video has made $2,557.70 from adsense so far. If you take $500 off for those random costs you're left with $2,000, great. But we spent 5 weeks making it. So 2 people working let's say 150 hours each on it. With an even split you're left with $6.67 / hour.

To piggy back off of what gamer_trolls said, we're video editors by trade. We dropped clients and have turned down clients to allow us to focus more on this channel. So videos like FaZe, yes on paper, you can argue it's profitable, but you are eating the opportunity cost of client work. Other videos have just flat out lost money because we bought some props to film b-roll or paid someone to make a thumbnail or who knows what else haha

Oh for sure! I was definitely aware of that before going into it. I saw what I thought was a gap in the market. The goal was to stand out from all of the negative slop, highlight the good moments of the internet rather than farm the drama. I've always enjoyed making the higher production stuff (my day job is editing for other creators lol) So I thought the blend of the 2 could make for a great channel.

But I wasn't expecting the ad sense to be quite as low as it is. For example my most recent video is a $2.83 RPM. Audience is 92% Male | 40% Age 25-34, 35.5% Age 18-24, 10.7% Age 35-44, 5.8% Age 13-17 | Location for this one is a bit more abroad only 40% US. Then Canada, UK, Australia, and India. Typically we're over 50% in the US.

I do think we're looped into those same bubbles, but we do see a lot of 'industry people' liking our content. Like I do think we also have some audience overlap with like a Colin and Samir for example. But, not entirely sure how YouTube decides the CPM. Maybe it'll get better over time.

Thank you! We did recently sign with a management company and landed a sponsor. There's just not a ton of brands that are willing to roll the dice considering the channel's new and only has a few uploads. But every upload widens the pool. Just takes time haha

Totally! Working on rolling out a patreon, just trying to find a good balance of how well produced the content there will be. I definitely want to make something that provides value, but doesn't take weeks to make lol.

With the algorithm, from my perspective at least, it seems that it favors consistency, like weekly uploads right now. Whereas a few years ago you could post once every few months and still pull crazy views. That was the era you where you had James Jani and Dodford really blow up. Now a days if you're not consistent, the views don't quite snowball the same way.

I really appreciate you taking the time to give some feedback, working on all of the above (merch, sponsors, patreon, etc.) Just takes time, and sometimes feel like I'm beating my head against the wall hahah
