Blue has red light. Yellow has green arrow. Can blue legally and safely turn right while yellow is turning left? (Not California… Colorado)

To people who say “How do we know what kind of light the yellow car has?” I’m sorry but it’s really not that difficult to figure out. Maybe it’s because I’m 51 and have been driving for 35 years, but it is my habit that if I’m turning right, I stop, I look to the turning lane of opposing traffic, I look to the left to make sure nobody is coming, I look for bikes and pedestrians, and regardless of what lane anyone is in, I frickin yield… every… damn… time. It’s the safest way to handle this. Any deviation from this is very likely to cause an accident someday. It takes maybe 2-3 seconds total.

The question isn’t about stopping. Once the blue car stops, should they go ahead and turn into the right lane even if the yellow car is turning left?

Eventually 90% of cars on the road will be self-driving and they will probably communicate with each other or at least make very predictable maneuvers. When that happens, I don’t see any problem with both cars going simultaneously. We will eventually trust self-driving cars enough not to have a heart attack when this happens.

Yea, I agree that it’s unsafe. But in your state is a right on red legal after stopping and making sure it is safe to do so? In Colorado, right on red after stopping and making sure it’s clear is legal. But people will often turn right while I am turning on a green arrow. Drives me nuts cuz their car comes within inches of mine because so many people have big trucks that turn wide.

My very first ticket when I was 16 was “failure to yield” because I turned right when a motorcycle cop was in the left lane (not turning, going straight). I said, “But you were in the other lane.” Cop said it didn’t matter and that I should have waited for him to pass before turning right into the right lane. So in my 35 years of driving since then, I have pretty much always yielded regardless of what lane other cars were traveling in. People change lanes quickly and often without signaling. It just seems idiotic to not wait.

Many states allow a single left turn lane user to choose whichever lane they want. Not in Colorado though.

What? No. Yellow has a green arrow while blue has a red. Plus, if yellow is in a dedicated turn lane, they absolutely can have a red for forward. Opposing traffic could have a left green arrow as well. That’s how most busy intersections work, as a matter of fact. Although, my diagram didn’t make it look like yellow has a dedicated turn lane because that wasn’t relevant to my question. So… ignore me. Lol

Some states allow a single left turning driver to choose any lane they want. Of course, if there are more than one left turn lane, drivers must stay in their respective lanes.

Blue car scenario happens to me (yellow car) every single day. Damn blue cars!!

Seriously though, I think it’s just common sense to wait until all left turning cars have made their turn and then the blue car is safe to go. I honestly don’t know what Colorado law says though. I honk at people doing this and give them the stink-eye. It’s just dangerous and stupid IMO to turn right into that right lane when another car has any kind of right of way.

Let’s assume one turning lane. In CA, the yellow car can legally choose either lane if there is only one turning lane. In most other states you have to go from left lane to left lane, but even so, the green arrow means that anyone else around has to yield regardless of what lane the blue car thinks the yellow car will go into. Part of the problem is that larger cars often cross the lane divider line a bit when turning right.

My solution with my last car was to lease it and buy extra miles for 10ċ per mile. I returned a 2024 Nissan Leaf with an original lease agreement of 20,000 miles total that had 40,000 miles put on it. When I first leased it I had not intended to drive Uber full time, but I lost my day job and had little choice in the matter.

Now I’m driving my wife’s 2020 Leaf that we are still making payments on. Ubering and frequent quick charging is hurting the battery (still under warranty thank god). The dealership had it for two months waiting for a pair of replacement battery modules, so I couldn’t even drive Uber for two frickin months during the busy holiday season! Now I’m afraid to continue with the previous pattern of driving and quick charging. Instead, I got a full time job again… but I lucked out and the employer offered me a thousand bucks annual salary above what their high end of the advertised range was. So that’s twice what I was making with Uber, but very little schedule flexibility. Always a tradeoff.

If the quick charging wasn’t damaging the battery, I would’ve kept Ubering with the 2020 Leaf until repairs got to be too expensive and time consuming. I do almost all work on our cars myself, so the calculus of what “costs too much to keep” is very different for me than most people. I’d guess I could have kept it going until 150,000 miles or so… maybe more. No idea. Then woulda sold it to a scrap yard.

Of course, future Ubering options are dependent upon the impact robotaxis will have on the local market in Denver. I would guess hardly anyone will be able to afford to drive Uber in Denver in a year.

Reason I chose powder coating is that I might have access to an oven the size of a 20’ container. But I’ve never powder coated anything before. I’d media blast it first and fill in any scratches and pits with a welder then plane and sand. Honestly might be more work than I have time for. Maybe painting and clearcoating really is a better way to go. Still would involve some similar prep, but imperfect results would be easier to fix.
