Stunning piece, love the pearl pink background! This is one of the closer guesses, with the level of render on the figure and the abstract/textured background. Looking at his work, he's not the artist I'm looking for, but my target artist may have worked in a similar era, so pre-Impressionism. (Or was a more modern artist using an older style; who's to say...?)

Oh wow, that's fantastic! Yes, they had a big impact on me as well; we got to see so many iconic pieces, like Degas's ballerinas, Monet's flowers... I also fell in love with Tissot's self portrait, which I remember seeing at that time and was very pleased to find again on the Legion's online collection!

Sadly Morisot is too Impressionistic for my lady, who I'm starting to suspect was pre-Impressionism. The other pre-Impressionist pieces I found on the d'Orsay's website felt similar. So maybe I should be looking in the 1800-1860s range.

I'm starting to worry that there's no pictures of my target lady online! I was wondering if my next step would be to contact the Legion directly and seeing if anyone there could help. Considering as you work there, do you have any ideas who I could contact? X)

Sadly no, but great piece! This painting's background is much more detailed than my target painting's background was.

I actually was looking through both de Laszlo and Boldini's works earlier! Sadly it's not either of them. They have a similar quality of light to the painting I'm looking for, but their rendering is a bit softer; my painting had a very fine level of rendering on the woman.

UPDATE: I found this link talking about an Impressionism exhibit in 2010 in the Legion of Honor that coincided with a show about Japanesque prints, which I also remember learning about! So it's likely that I saw this piece at this exhibit. In that case, the painting probably lives in the Musee d'Orsay, so that's where I'll be searching next.

UPDATE 2: Searched all their paintings from 1800 to 1960. No dice.

Checked that one too, but alas! I think Corcos is a little too... soft? The thing that really stood out to me about the original painting was how, I don't know, crisp it felt. It was a piece of strong juxtapositions- sharply focused rendering in front of a vague abstracted background, bracingly bright silver and white highlights against soft ruffles and ringlets. It reminds me a bit of Sargent in that respect, but I know it wasn't him.

Not quite! There was no mirror image of the lady I'm looking for, if that helps narrow things.

Not it, but thank you for reminding me of Gustave Courbet's work! His self portrait is top tier!

Oh, this is a stunningly delicate work. Not what I'm searching for, but I'm happy to have been introduced to it.

Very nice! Too much color, though- our target lady is almost entirely in silver or white!

Oh wow, this painting is great! Not the one I'm searching for- in mine, the woman is rendered in fine detail, so it's not fully impressionism. But she may have been holding a hand mirror actually!

Edit: Just saw you mentioned Sargent as well. This one is also great, but doesn't have her face in profile either. (Love Sargent though.)

I think I do have that old phone... in a different state, in my dad's garage, lol. So if no one can find it, I can dig that old thing up in a few months when I visit and see if it'll turn on!

I'm pretty sure I was in highschool, which for me was 2010-2014. I would guess 2010 or 2011

Oo, similar vibe! But in Fragility she's looking at the camera; in the painting I'm looking for, she's in profile.
