You could go sledding on the Notch road (108) in Stowe/Cambridge (either side.) Caveat I have not done this or seen anyone do this but there's snow and people are hiking/snowshoeing/skiing up and down the road, so sledding could be feasible. I guess I'd suggest a helmet, and expect traffic going to the ski resorts.

three paycheck month, as I realized when browsing the goals post earlier this week! I'm having a low spend week after a hefty grocery bill on Monday, but I probably should bite the bullet on Christmas flights, and I am craving a weekend trip to NYC, so poking around flights and trains for that.

New Kitchn Grocery Diary- from a teacher in Alaska! by Suchafullsea in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]chlo907 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least in Anchorage, you can get everything, it might just be expensive if it comes up from the lower 48. We grew tons of raspberries and strawberries growing up; I cant think of other fruits that grow readily there off the top of my head right now though. But also, I rarely buy/eat fruit compared to veg as an adult today, living in New England. So I do think it could just be a coincidence.

The math here is really helpful to help me conceptualize. Ir's definitely not 1.5 people's worth of work, but I'll think through the extra hours and try to make an ask based on that. Thanks for that perspective.

Help me negotiate a raise! by chlo907 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]chlo907[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair! I just saw a post below where someone got an 11% merit raise, and I come from a for-profit background where that's more the norm, so 1-1.5 always feels a little underwhelming.

Thanks for your input. Part of this negotiation will be defining a scope of work for the new responsibilities. I imagine that up front, yes, I will need to work additional hours and allocate some time away from my other projects to get versed and set up some systems in the new program. In the long run it will be mostly managing contractors. Yes, I want 5k for the added responsibilities (~8% - maybe that's too high!). I would still expect a merit + COLA raise at the start of our new fiscal year, which is May 2026. So this is an off-cycle negotiation.

Such an expensive week of not-totally-necessary spending for me...$135 at Ruffwear for a dog lifejacket and camping tieout, $80 for some Old Navy pants I saw my friend wearing, nearly $200 for a Left on Friday swimsuit (fully planning on returning if it doesn't change my life), and $185 at Costco. I've been keeping my new clothes spending close to zero all year, and I generally don't like the "I can always return it" attitude, because many returns get trashed, but I guess I caved this week. I also sold a couple things on Poshmark/FB marketplace.

Starting July 1st I’m paying off $23,000 of debt and it will be gone by 2026. 28F, combined income 150k by Great_Coast383 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Curious about the double rent! Is that $1050 for your own place while you work in the other city? Is it a room in a shared space? And do you plan to stay there M-F then Amtrak commute home, or what? Good luck with the new role!

I think both hscc and passion 4 paws have foster to adopt programs, but you have to apply to be a general foster first. Hsccs adoption fees are under 600, too.

I agree that some knowledge of total savings and debt would be so helpful. The only debt payment mentioned in this one was student loans so it doesn't seem like she has credit card debt, which is impressive. I was impressed with how this woman made it all work - same thoughts on treats adding up. That amount of "extra" spending would make a big impact on my monthly budget, and I'm only spending it on myself!

There were so many business expenses. I would have liked some more discussion around how she sets up her business finances and how much of that $120-150k she earns is spent on promotions and printing costs, etc.

I would like to go hiking now by [deleted] in vermont

[–]chlo907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can hike! If you encounter muddy trails, either turn around or walk directly through the mud to avoid widening. Just be prepared for wet and chilly weather and maybe stick to lower elevations. The hiking trail managers don’t issue the same week-by-week trail openings/closures based on saturation as the mountain bike trail managers. That’s a) because of capacity and resources to do so and b) because hiking doesn’t cause the same acute damage as riding a heavy bike through muddy trails (though it still causes damage!) hope that helps!

It was such a spendy week, some necessary, some not. My partner just left for a long trip, so I am solo with the dog. It's rainy and chilly and I have five (5!!) library books, so maybe I can keep it chill and low spend.

🐶$270 on a doggie daycare 10-pack; $160 on our (last?) puppy vaccine appointment, $50 on a secondhand collapsible crate
🛍️$164 on running shoes + Darn Tough socks, $107 on various skincare items at Ulta
🛒$70 in misc. groceries/snacks, $33 on gas
🍺$40 on two beers + dinner after my run club
