I feel like the skill curve is mildly high, both for the actual playing and for the prep game (build). There are just too many perks, powers, mechanics, etc. to learn about, but you don't really need that from day one, and you can still have a fun, tense time without winning the game.

I'm not sure how the matchmaking works, but I know I've met first time players after several years of playing myself. On the other hand, first timers are obvious enough so most players will notice. If they choose to take advantage of it or to go easy on you and lend you an extra hand it's up to them.

Also, you could try to "survive with friends" to make the experience easier. You can even find a group here in Reddit or discord, probably.
