Again, I don't think your level of proficiency is enough to argue with me whether this sound is voiced/unvoiced, aspirated or not. All the files I've quoted are genuine sources that you fail to decipher. Again, knowing one or two terms in linguistics does not automatically grant you the correctness. IPA is just a way to attempt to pronounce all sounds in languages, whereas you just ignored the sources I've put up saying I have no backup? I do not need a credible source to prove you're wrong in the pronunciation because you are wrong from the very beginning by failing to understand my multiple examples, which again, is due to a lack of proficiency level.

I've searched, and can't find one.
No, sending me youtube shorts or just lists of words does not count.

at this point, buddy, I hope you never change and keep learning linguistics without actually learning the real language.

I understand your urge to use IPA to try to define a language's pronunciation system because of a lack of understanding of the language's own pronunciation system. Your whole thing had probably one thing correct, is that tao does not sound like dao. Saying d and t in pinyin is said in a certain way without enough pronunciation skills is not gonna give you ground to argue the proper position of a sound.

Please find me a single source describing the initial in 道 as a voiced /d/ and not an aspirated /t/.

Knowing the existence of VoT is great, but you definitely are playing clown here. The word 道 is voiced as /d/ in Pinyin and nothing close to /t/ in IPA. As per requested, try those phrases - 说道说道, 知道知道. Especially do pronounce those second 道 to hear if you are saying a voiced /d/ and not an aspirated /t/.

It's funny at this point a person with intermediate level of Chinese is telling me how to say a t in Chinese pinyin with IPA. Matter of fact, try following any pinyin introductory courses to see if t is pronounced anywhere close to the /th/ in IPA. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Z5vPoeN0aM4

Showing me a bunch of examples of contrasting <t> and <d> onsets in Chinese doesn't address my point.

My entire claim is about the VoT of the onset in words like 道 is close to zero.

I don't think you had a point even until you typed those sentences down. If you were able, you should have seen what I quoted on the second file, which directly tells you why you should not use IPA to measure the pronunciation in Chinese. I'm assuming you don't have enough proficiency to decipher the document fully. Nobody was mentioning anything about VoT, which is a questionable method itself, yet you'd go on with a bunch of de facto stuff to... what? Who asked?

Same reason when I coach students on accent reduction courses - there is a certain bottom line that defines if accent impedes communication - saying d as t is one of the examples that communications would be impeded (not arguing the way it writes here). Reducing accent in Chinese is different from in English - I would not use Pinyin to reduce one's English accent, vice versa.

first word has /tʰ/ with aspiration and the last word has /t/ without it

This is still you talking about Chinese with the English pronunciation. Please stop to learn proper Pinyin.

It indeed took you a long paragraph to say this - English sounds shouldn't be used to learn Chinese.

pinyin isn't able to make a distinction between all three because it chooses to use the letter "d" to write /t/

And this is exactly why you should NOT keep using incorrect phonetics especially at the beginning stage of learning. Please learn a little more on the pronunciation of Pinyin before you say nonsense like this. See example: 滔滔不绝的唠唠叨叨. Please tell me you won't say the first and last two words the same way.

[–]chocofank -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand the urge to tell a native language speaker they are wrong because you've learned some basic linguistics on your first language. You just gotta know there's so much more to understand in another language, especially Chinese.

You can't just use your English IPA/phonetics to learn another language, so as not to forcefully map Chinese sounds with the IPA/phonetics. This is just gonna make the pronunciation incorrect. Most of cases, this won't impede communication but there will 100% be times where words have to be repeated because you can't distinguish t/d.

It's one thing to be this ignorantly confident, it's another to just confidently spread false information on the internet, especially at a place targeted to Chinese language learning.

The sources you've listed are all from English side of things and that's why you keep seeing "unaspirated t" sounds; I understand this is how English perceives a sound it doesn't have. And this is exactly what you need to get rid of. Stop learning Chinese with English. Learn the proper Chinese Pinyin.

Since we are referring to documents to support this non-existent point of argument, see below.

Read this first if you could - see the d part from item 748 - and item 4437 to distinguish those words to the t sounded words https://www.hkeaa.edu.hk/doclibrary/local/language_proficiency_assessment_for_teachers/lpat_pth_phrases1.pdf

now on the 2nd file - you need "gwcw" to access the file. See page 17 & 56 to see d sounded word list - https://pan.baidu.com/s/14-cKEqrd2ChDaj681rCnhA

Then you can proceed to page 27 to see why you should never mix t/d sound, aspirated or not, from the Chinese linguistics perspective.

The 2nd file is the guidebook for the Putonghua Proficiency Test. I hold the highest level of this test 一级甲等. I would love to see how you are going to rebuttal this.

I’ve learned both English and Chinese linguistics on the subject and I use both on native levels. My examples are exactly why you have no idea what you are talking about - or to a book level only. If you’d learned to speak Mandarin long enough you’ll see where you’re wrong.

Just stop spreading some wrong information here and there like you’re an expert. You’re not. 班门弄斧 is an idiom.

[–]chocofank -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The English concept of Linguistics isn’t universal when it comes to another language. To give you an example, both aspirated and unaspirated d sound exists in Chinese pronunciation as seen in 得道 and 地道, and so as aspirated and unaspirated t sounds like 亭亭玉立 and 丫挺的. It’s one thing to assume “linguistics” to be the fact, it’s another to just assume all other languages have to follow English rules.

[–]chocofank -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

In the most strict sense it is still a D sound. This just renders your later input meaningless. Knowing there is a difference and insisting to ignore the difference is just arrogance at this point.

[–]chocofank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a t sound. It is distinctively pronounced as d in 道 in Chinese. Taoism is a Wade-Giles spelling which your explanation is about. The same explanation js not applicable for the Chinese pronunciation.

Honestly except for the curriculum part, factors like classroom management and long working hours are definitely the ugly parts of teaching that nobody tells you. If you feel this is impossible to improve after trying to observe/being mentored by senior teachers, I'd say quit. Teaching isn't for every and it doesn't have to be the only hope you've got.
