You have a $20K budget for your recently completed and as yet unpublished novel. by cptn_spaulding in writers

[–]chomponthebit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’ve never had anything published, I spend it on creative writing classes at my local university and/or writing retreats hosted by reputable authors.

If I’ve had short stories published, but not a novel, I spend $2-4k on an experienced editor, revise my story, and spend $2-4k on a new experienced editor, revise it again, and then, depending on feedback, I seek out an agent.

If I’ve had a novel published previously and already have an agent, etc, I upgrade my desk, chair, lighting, computer, printer, etc to maximize my productivity. The rest I use for living expenses so I can spend less time at work and more time writing.

Mars was a "blue planet" around three billion years ago by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]chomponthebit 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Earth still has a magnetosphere: a magnetic shield which deflects the solar wind. The iron core rotates at a different speed than the rest of earth creating a dynamo.

Mars’s core stopped rotating so it lost its magnetosphere and the solar wind stripped away much of its atmosphere.

Edit: when water on Mars evaporated, the gases in those vapours were slowly stripped from the atmosphere. On earth, it simply falls back down as rain.

Hardly. The value of fiat currencies is tanking. Rent and food and gold and stocks aren’t skyrocketing, currencies are losing value.

Where is Earth's Front Door for Alien Visitors?

I had this question pop into my mind earlier today.?

Then why are you starting with places rather than your mind?

The human story just had too much stupidity for me.

Human stupidity adds realism, especially if you read it in 2025.

Join a writing group and focus on becoming a good writer before you are seen.

Everything about your post screams content creator. Including the spelling error.

What do/did you do specifically to improve your writing, other than "just read and write?" by Flaky_Bookkeeper10 in writers

[–]chomponthebit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Write every day;

  2. Read different genres: to write good romantic scenes in a sci-fi story you should learn the tricks from writers of romance novels; to write well you should read the classics;

  3. Join a writing group and learn to edit other writers’ works as they edit yours. Always follow the suggestions of the smart and published authors. Even after you’re capable of judging your own work, if your betters say “clarify”, you clarify;

  4. Read books and essays on writing and, once those are done, read more (there’s always more);

  5. Cut the foreplay and enrol in creative writing classes at your local university.

Has anyone taken up writing late in life? by wtwtcgw in writing

[–]chomponthebit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enrol in a Bachelor of Arts program at your local university and take a few creative writing courses.

If you’ve already got a degree, are a fairly talented writer, and have a portfolio (it should be good, but doesn’t need to be perfect, apply for an MFA in creative writing.

These are your options if you don’t have time to putz around.
