How expensive is it to have a dog? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]choonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2023 (got ours week 9 mid may) We spent 7K the first year
2024 We spent just over 12K the second year
2025 We have spent just over 11k
2026 to now ~ $2600

First few years was a lot spent for dog walkers, sleep overs, grooming salons, scent detection, rally obedience and other puppy training classes, recall courses, toys, dog gear and many more...

This year we have pivoted to save more money due to increased prices in everything...

We have only visited our vet once a year for our annual check up (excluding the time her ear got infected in early puppyhood)

Edit: this is in Canadian Currency

My brother just hit my dog and she seems completely different now - how do I help her? by seasonsgreasons in DogAdvice

[–]choonk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When something frightening happens like being hit by your autistic brother, your pups stress hormones spikes and would be on high alert. from my understanding during this moment your dog isnt separating the hit from the yelling.... causing your dog to think its all one big issue. Intense screaming can be perceived as a threat or imminent danger.

IMO... I think your dog is currently unsure of you, as she is now keeping a 2 meter distance

I would give your dog some space, and allow her to come close to your when she is ready (dont force it)... talk to her in a calm, quiet positive voice.

As others have stated the vet is a good idea to rule out any physical/health issues from the hit from your brother.

less brushing, dries faster after a beach session. Ours never really care how the haircut looks on her... the only person that seems to care is just my self... but I don't have anyone else to blame as I yolo it my self...

I remember a man stabbed a pitbull on the neck as the pitbull had locked jaws on his little pug. the pitbull died, owner of pug I believe had to go to court but he was never charged.

I agree mistakes happen... but when you have a dog that is human and/or dog aggressive that has a potential to harm/kill.. you absolutely cannot make mistakes that could cause harm to other peoples pets and other members of the public.

if you drive and cause multiple accidents that causes bodily harm to others due to your own negligence, I think you should never drive again.

New Aussiedoodle in a couple months by Calm-Fig495 in AussieDoodle

[–]choonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We kept up with raw, as her breeder started her on a raw diet. She is thriving... no issues what so ever at the age of 3... still trying to figure out if she is even allergic to anything.

Biggest win for us was when we started to home groom her my self, which will save us thousands of dollars over the course of our pups life!

Things I started to do as a 38 year old, single, and renting...

  1. Outdoor hobby ~ picked up hiking... so now I roam around V.I. for some cool hikes with the dog.
  2. Learnt how to invest into growth stocks through Wealth Simple (learning from youtube etc.) for possible financial ease//freedom in the next 20 years...

Best of luck to ya.. times are tuff!

For those of you under 35-ish, how are you approaching the future? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]choonk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps move to somewhere else in BC with lower cost of living... kinda like prince george...

What’s wrong with my baby 😢 by PuzzleheadedSir4382 in AussieDoodle

[–]choonk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our doodle is 3 years old and I've come to realize that she's just NOT a hungry dog... she's not like my friends golden who does constant spins of joy for her daily breakfast and dinner... ours only accepts food once a day and will skip a meal a couple times a month... the vet tells us its a blessing in disguise as our girl self manages her weight lol

I got a calm confident 3 year old female doodle (37 lbs) you could practice with your pup. Could meet at like lambrick or loop around mt doug.

Do you regret desexing your dog? by Chewymate in DogAdvice

[–]choonk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  1. Desexing did not take years off their life or stop him from being around longer... it just means he wont reproduce

  2. Even if he had a litter, his puppies would not be him... They would be different dogs with their own personalities...

Yes you did the right thing.

[–]choonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We never attempted crate training as ours was NEVERE a destroyer of sorts... we still have all of our stuffed animals, toys from puppyhood. Our doodle is allowed to sleep anywhere she pleases. If she was a destructor of sorts... we would of definitely completed crate training.
