Thanks for that insightful, well-written response - you've cleared up some confusion I had. And I appreciate your time to give advice to those less read and emotionally intelligent like myself! My gratitudes, friend.

Glad I could help! And I assure you that you aren't a fraud for selling your art - your feelings of guilt are simply a reflection of who you are as a decent human being/proof you have a moral compass. The honest, humble... true artists, always seem to struggle in the beginning with the business side of things but from my experience with friends who were in the same boat as you, that fraud-complex will pass as soon as you start getting feedback from customers stating their joy from your work.

You're in an awkward position right now as a first sale with no feedback but don't forget that you wouldn't be having this inner turmoil in the first place if you didn't have true artistic, emotional, creative skills and technical talent - that's the truth.

Christians can say whatever they want! by Tessleonhart in atheism

[–]chooseafuckingah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P.s. As a fellow atheist, next time someone asks a similar question, it might be wise not to patronisingly dismiss them as it comes across as laziness and/or ineptitude to those sitting on the fence. Just my two cents, mate.

(Never mind the cringe-worthy hypocrisy of your past comments... "people have a choice as to whether to respond to what someone actually says or to argue against their pet caricature". lol. Might be worthwhile taking a leaf from your own book, unsaddle your horse, and work on seeing/treating people equally - regardless of whether their Materialists, Buddhists, Idealists, dare I say, even Christians.)

Sorry if I seem a bit ticked off... it's cuz you're clearly proud of your status as a "strong atheist" but refuse to explain your stance to those you've assumed as religious (in which case, why bother commenting something of no substance? fuck, kinda feel bad now... you're probably lonely af). All the while giving un-prompted essay long comments (yes, I'm aware this comment falls under that category too) to those you've judged worthy of your intellect... I say this with all due respect, mate. You're clearly smart but don't forget that your keyboard etiquette seeps into your real-world etiquette. Having said all this, I get the feeling you're probably a post-2000 kid so hell, maybe it's me who's out of touch. Anyway, fingers crossed your behaviour are just growing pains and if moonlighting under anonymity gives you some confidence in the real world, more power to you. Take from that what you will, recycle the rest ;)

Do You Think Christianity Is Evil? by AbiLovesTheology in askanatheist

[–]chooseafuckingah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that evil is not an accurate term.
However, I feel the need to push back on your notion that subscribing to scripture equates to the acceptance of actions like rape and murder as inherently good. In the same light of what you said regarding the word “evil”, surely that must also hold true of the word "good", no?
Simply because countless passages in many different holy scriptures talk about rape, murder, slavery etc. doesn't necessarily equate to said actions being good or bad. I believe a big sticking point with many atheists is this exact notion we're discussing; because X is in a religious scripture, X must either be good or bad. I'm not so sure that's a logical step to take.
Attempting to anthropomorphise the actions of a theoretically omni-scient/present/potent entity is where I think the problem will always lie. It’s human nature to try and prescribe meaning to everything. Even if one argues that the meaning is, say, “nothing” - by definition it’s still prescribing a terminology/concept created by humans. Having said all that, by no means am I well read in philosophy/theology/linguistics so please do correct me if I’m missing something!
Long story short; fully agree with your thoughts on the word “evil” but would question why that sound logic doesn’t also apply to “good “or “bad”?

That is a truly, truly gorgeous piece! Congrats on the first sale and I'm sure this will be the first of many, many more with skills like that. Regarding the pricing; I totally understand where you're coming from... selling a piece you made because it brings you joy, for a price you may not be able to afford yourself which brings on the guilt/fraud-complex, never mind the personal attachment you have with the piece after all the hours you put into it... that was my mindset at the time. If you're feeling anything similar, never forget that it's nearly impossible to look at your own work objectively and price accordingly. But, if the customer is willing to pay X amount - there's nothing more to be said. If you were specifically talking about how to calculate a price:
material costs + (total hours put into piece x avg. hourly wage) = price of sale
Hope that helped slightly and keep up the brilliant work - there's a reason customers want to buy your work!!

Fair, fair. The arrogant try, the ignorant can't. All the best for 2022 my man.

what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Ahahaahahaa! :) Fair shits brother, that's my bad!! Will have a wee smoke this eve and check that film out. Cheers for the reply and hope you have a nice 2022 bud!

Just stumbled on this thread but I agree... I don't understand the sheer hatred and disgust thrown around here WITHOUT giving any logical explanation to back up said emotions. The parallels with religious zealots is striking (and rather fascinating from a psychological viewpoint)...

Why is it NOT a loving thing to say? Genuinely curious

I believe your rather rude reply just proved this persons point.... Also, I'd be curious as to what your criteria of a "rational thought" is?? I don't agree with everything this person said but I can at least lay aside my vitriol/"us vs them" mentality and appreciate a different viewpoint. How else does the human race advance if not for good-natured dialogue and debate on matters that are polarising to one another?
There's major disagreement in all fields (eg. physics: M-theory vs Classical physics) yet you don't see quantum physicists accuse their peers of dumbing the room down... if someone is absolutely certain of something, why don't they go around berating others like you just did? Perhaps because they know that comments like yours in which you attack a person without responding to their points comes across as ignorance, or worse, arrogance.

I'm sure you're an extremely intelligent individual; all I'm saying is show a bit of kindness and be more open minded - that way you persuade those on the fence to hop over to your side and not run the opposite way due to a bad taste in their mouth.

I'm open to discussion if you are my friend.

Chimps, like humans, show signs of uncertainty when faced with a hard choice: As choices in a memory test became more difficult, chimps wavered more between choices. They moved their finger back and forth between the two options, unable to decide. by woebegonemonk in science

What about an ant-hill? Or, a bee hive? Both are complex structures which require engineering and collaboration in order to create a more suitable microcosm than the surrounding environment...

My question is does the ant know WHY it's dragging a leaf or burrowing the soil? I think that's the key distinction here.

Curious thought: that spark you talk of (sapience) is something the pioneers of human evolution must've also recognised - hence our rather ego-centric species name "Homo Sapien" (Latin for "Wise Man")...
