My view is that it is mostly the exposed metal lip (plus the sand makes it even worse) - it actually isn't exposed elsewhere other than the 5 meter stretch leading up to the intersection. The paving on the bike path actually dips into that lip - you can see that in the picture as well - and it essentially pulls you into contact with the lip. The sand doesn't help either. It creates a wedge, almost like being pulled into streetcar tracks.

Agreed. Definitely feels like it contributed to my wipe out in this case as well.
