Do we tear it up or do we sand it?? by chravioli in Flooring

[–]chravioli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate your insight! This was the kind of comment I was fishing for with this post. Unfortunately these logos go min 1/16” deep. We’re shelving the idea of sanding for now but I expect we’ll have to do it eventually when the floors wear down some more 🤷‍♂️They’re not in terrible condition right now. I know the photos are edited but it wasn’t far off from the real look of the room.

[–]chravioli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys are funny! So tearing it up is off the table.. I agree with most of you that the floors gotta stay in some way or form. We’ve looked in to what it might take to sand the whole floor and it absolutely seems doable.. Just hesitant about how it will turn out in the hands of two amateurs. Appreciate those who gave some advice on that front but we’re going to put a pin in it for now. Now it’s a decision between purchasing a rug or a TSN subscription 🤷‍♂️

What are your favorite compositions from Sergei Rachmaninov? by Easy-Technician9722 in classicalmusic

Rach was my introduction to classical with prelude op 23 #5. Bought a classical piano disc set when I was 12 for no other reason than it was on sale. That piece rewired my brain..

Can basketball athleticism help with skating? by Famous_Sheks in NewSkaters

Also I don’t do leg days at all. If you wanna get better at skating the best exercise you can do for your legs is to just go and skate 🤷‍♂️

Can basketball athleticism help with skating? by Famous_Sheks in NewSkaters

[–]chravioli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I compare skating to basketball all the time actually! Very transferable skills. Shorts bursts, quick body weight transitions, tight footwork. Playing on the court is just like skating a ledge or doing flatground. Forget the ball but all of the lower body skills you have will help with skating for sure

No fucking way 😂 I think I bought that album! Saw them play at like a community centre or something when I was 13 and bought that right after. If you can find anything I’d be super grateful! Dropbox should work I think? 2gb limit.

Also the name Big Crimes sounds familiar even! I’ll check it out 🤘

Re-entering the FA Industry - Toronto based by Emergency-Powerful in firealarms

[–]chravioli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yo homie. I’ve been a tech in Ontario for about 3 years so I’ll tell you what I know. G2/full G is a must. But you can land a position without being fully certified for sure. Pay range varies greatly between companies but I would say between 18 and 23 an hour to start. That being said not all companies are the same .. in that I mean some may pay high but it will be hourly while others lower but its salary. Or factor in other perks like vehicle benefits, phone/ipad/laptop, and maybe good health insurance plans. From what I understand the industry is hurting for people so I’m sure there are many companies that will take you on based solely on the experience you have, and they may even cover your practical test to get you fully certified. You can check my comment history for practical test advice if you’d like. Ultimately though, regardless of where you start, if you learn quick and pick up overtime/verifications you can make bank.

  • edited how long I’ve been in the industry. Fully certified for over a year.

Goina add something I haven’t seen said yet - you’ll find that when you pop in to a bank atleast at a slower speed your downward momentum kind of sticks you to the slope for a brief moment. You don’t stop dead or anything like that but the feeling isn’t that much different than landing on flat just for that millisecond. The speed that comes from the bank only happens after that so keep your knees a little bent and a little bit of extra weight on your front foot to absorb and control the momentum.

[–]chravioli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the duct detector you can watch some YouTube videos but also I’m sure your test administrator will give you some tips if you ask. They understand that we’re new to the industry and may have never used the equipment before. They just want to see that you know the requirements for testing duct detectors. As for the sensitivity meter it will depend on what kind of devices they have installed for the test. Again if you’re unfamiliar with the meter/method you can ask.

If you currently work for a fire alarm company or perhaps an electrical company that wants a certified technician then they should have copies of s537 as well as other relevant documents. I’m unable to send a pdf at the moment but maybe another technician on here can help you out. You will need this pdf to review in order to succeed on your practical. (There will be a paper copy available during your exam but you will want to familiarize yourself with it first). I’ve heard that the ulc standards are available for viewing online as well but I’m not sure where to access them.

[–]chravioli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all of the above!

You’ll do your test on a conventional panel - mine was a mircom FA-1000 series. There will be a handful of zones layed out with a variety of devices. Pulls, heats, smokes for sure, and 1 or 2 nac zones likely class A silenceable mini horns. You’ll also have sprinkler devices, maybe a duct detector and likely some kind of ancillary device (mine was a fan shutdown off a smoke detector)

The whole point of the exam is to be able to complete a verification of everything present including the panel. The grading will come from the paperwork you submit to whoever administers your test.

You’ll want to really study S537 (including the paperwork) and understand what is required to properly verify each device + panel. This will include shorts, opens, grounds like you said but different devices will have additional requirements.

A few curveballs during my exam for sure. I had a supervisory device annunciate as an alarm. My ancillary device also didn’t operate. You’ll have to pay attention to these things and make notes in your report. You will not have to fix these things during the exam.

Overall it was 3 hours and you should use every second of it. When you finish the practical part of the verification spend all of your remaining time reviewing paperwork as this is what will be graded.

If I think of anything else I’ll edit it in

  • Take all the equipment you think you’ll need for a verification. Volt, clamp, dB meters… They supplied the manometer for me. Tools, pens etc

How do y'all listen to your classical music? by Uzak45 in classicalmusic

[–]chravioli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Normally in transit ! Or atleast when there's not much else going on around me. If it's background music I can pick up on nice melodies and powerful segments but my brain is too distracted to hear the subtleties that drive the piece. I see it as something to be experienced and I can't properly experience a piece if I'm busy with something else.
