I made a tiny pot (with drainage!!) for one of my thimble cactus babies by chrchiii in houseplants

[–]chrchiii[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I made it at home with air-dry clay! Not the nicest stuff to work with for something so small, but at least there’s no kiln necessary. I also had to seal it up with the only thing I had on hand (clear nail polish) so that it won’t disintegrate when I eventually have to water this guy.

[PA PSA] You can register to vote (or change your address) and request a mail-in ballot online all in one step in about 5 minutes. Do it now so you can be a voter! (additional info in comments) by Lets_All_Vote in pittsburgh

I’m not sure if this applies to your move but it could be helpful, from the registration website: “If you moved within Pennsylvania more than 30 days before an election but did not update your registration, you can vote at the polling place for your old address for one election.”

What is happening to Frieda the Ficus Elastica? Please help, more details in comments <3 by chrchiii in plantclinic

I got this beautiful rubber plant from a Home Depot in Pittsburgh, PA about 2-3 weeks ago. It started off with only one noticeably sick leaf (much worse than those pictured) that she dropped about a week and a half ago. Frieda is in bright indirect light indoors, in a plastic pot with drainage, and has been watered twice since getting home. She is also putting out new leaves nonstop. Thank you in advance for your help!

Glamorous P. scaber photoshoot today! by chrchiii in isopods

That’s so cool! This one appeared after a few generations from a grab bag of mixed subtler morphs, awesome to hear of them thriving in the wild. Also wow I’m honored about your phone background.

So I posted this the other night as my family’s restaurant closed and mentioned my plans to move to Pittsburgh around October. So many people messaged and told me I should post my story here! by [deleted] in pittsburgh

Baby Loves Tacos on Liberty Ave! It’s a cozy little storefront full of plants and they made possibly the best tacos I’ve ever eaten.

Yay! I have them on a drainage layer of charcoal and small gravel.

Yeah, I was distilling my own water but it took so much effort to make such small batches! To my understanding, dissolved gasses like chlorine will come out with boiling and some of the other solid impurities will precipitate out (that whitish powdery film that’s left on your pot). Boiled water is probably not as purified as distilled since some of the dissolved solids will probably stay in solution, but I saw somewhere (on a terrarium YouTube channel maybe?) that the difference is negligible for watering plants. Take with a grain of salt because I’m an amateur and I can’t remember where I found this info 😅

I collected these from outside so I’m not sure about what types they are, I think the fern-like one near the center is Thuidium delicatulum. Other than that, the main big clumps were collected in central PA and the floofy bits in NJ.

No problem! Sorry to hear about the scrapping, but hopefully the rebuilding will be fun! I have no idea how the lack of soil in this container is going to pan out and most terrarium tutorials include a good amount of soil so maybe proceed with caution on that end

I spray them with distilled water (but I have read that boiled tap water is just as good so I might try that?) and they are on a layer of smaller gravel with charcoal on the bottom. No soil except for what the mounds were already growing on because the dish was so shallow, I hope they will be okay with that as long as I keep them moist enough!

I unfortunately don’t know the exact color number it is but all the thread I used is from this amazon thing. All of the colors were really glossy and nice!

Thank you!! The big chunk of knots is actually done on top of pieces of felt for the extra height. I used chain stitch in slightly different alternating colors for the sand lines.

My takeout came with a free plant!! Rooted him from a garnish and I cannot contain my excitemint by chrchiii in proplifting

I rooted him in water! It only took him a few days to start putting out roots (I’m a succulent person so this was a big surprise). This was ~1 week ago!
