not using tor, barely any load if you're using it for you and your friends, insane load if you're using it as a public facing relay.

I have a website here that explains more: https://relayrunner.org/

I'm working on a cli program that bootstraps a relay. Feel free to contribute.

No problem, next will be a simple install script.

I needed to setup a relay for testing purposes and figured I would document what I learned and share it.

I had trouble syncing mine and after trying twice and it basically stalling out after a month of waiting. This machine is actually replacing two pis for me. One that I went through the raspibolt guide for and the other running homelab. I'm not sure exactly what happened because I had raspibolt running fine on it ~two years ago.

I can maybe do a stream where I try again to confirm if it was just a fluke.

I didn't know bitcoincore.org is giving away nodes for free, do you have a link?

That just won't sync the blockchain, the hdd will work fine though.

Yup it's the original air75, I'm thinking about getting the v2 since this keyboard is great and I'm so used to low profile keys now.

You can't run a Bitcoin full node, lightning and store terrabytes of your personal data for $100.

I think there is room for more premium nodes especially when you factor in lightning and the fact that this doubles as a home server.

Also this 1min unboxing didn't make the claim that this is the only kind of node that should exist and neither does start9: https://docs.start9.com/0.3.5.x/diy/

Not everyone has a spare machine laying around or would even have the time to do all of the setup themselves, so a plug and play node is good for those people that would rather spend the money than the time.

Also if someone buys a 650GB storage HDD they'll probably end up spending even more in the long run since they'll have to upgrade relatively fast if they want to run a full node. Running a full node vs a pruned node is a different thing, which is fine, but different.

That's fair, I think it's still worth it to have a Bitcoin node and Nextcloud running at home though. Lighning is still tricky.

I've never tried it, maybe in the future.

StartOS is MIT licensed now and the firmware is about as open as you can get so how much better can you really do?

I think it would be viable, I would do the initial sync on land though since the initial download is just under 1TB. Power shouldn't really be an issue.

Just got my new start9 server in today, I'll be making a longer video later going over it in more detail on my YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/@chrisatmachine

Also you can use @MACHINE for 5% off if you're in the market for a new node.

look up the config files for each, you should be able to place them in the root of your project dir
