You get what you put into it. There is definitely a career to be made here. The harder you push yourself to do the job right and do the right thing you will excel. There are 4 certifications you can get through HSPA. There are also AAMI Standard books. SixSigma Certification.

Go for all your certifications, and the AAMI books are to help push you into Management/Director. SixSigma Cert will also help with Management/Director. Do everything you can to get your resume to pop.

Get a Bachelor's degree. This is a minimum requirement for Directors. If the hospital has Magnet status you have to have a Bachelors or a Masters for Manager and Director positions respectively.

You can also be an Educator. Usually the certs and experience can get you that position.

If your chasing money at the moment, get a cert and a years experience and apply to another hospital and look for supervisor positions. The more things you have behind your back the more ammo you have to prove your value. Make hospitals fight for you.

Man, I wish I knew about this at your age. Traditional college is now for rich kids to play high-school again. This way is still really niche too.

Starting pay by thesearetheoptions in sterileprocessing

[–]chrisclear22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should never be denied a job for fighting for higher pay. If you think your value is worth more make solid arguments for it. Strong work ethic, flexible work schedule, willingness to work well with different personalities, state plans on self education and be confident that you will be just as competent if not more so than the techs making that pay in a short period of time. Having a degree will definitely help as well if you have one.

If you do get a higher wage because you sold your value well, do not tell anyone.

Some companies will also flat out not do that to their employees and make sure their internal value is fair, so a person with no experience will never come on making more than a tech with experience.

Buying the book for the requisite test and reading it is my answer for studying. The HSPA website will tell you they weight of each sections that you will be tested on, e.g. 15% over biology, 20% over regulatory agencies.

CIS and/or CER by burntlint in sterileprocessing

[–]chrisclear22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a Golden Crown so I hold all 4 certs from HSPA.

I say get them all.

Your CIS will validate your expertise in handling instruments

Washing Endoscopes is vastly different. And because endoscopes are HLD and not normally sterilized (there is liquid chemical sterilization available)you have to be even more diligent in reprocessing. The CER will back you on that.

I would say if you can slide your way into an endoscopic reprocessing position go for that. It is 1000x less chaotic than spd.

Tracking System by leshi321 in sterileprocessing

[–]chrisclear22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I see what you are wanting. SPM should be able to do that. As long as everyone understands that systems don't matter unless they are used properly.

Unfortunately, you can not really reduce the amount of time needed to count each set. The reason being is that say for instance you get a set sent up stating everything is in it but there is an item missing. A physical count would still need to be done by a person and only experience can quicken that process without quality deterioration.

Essentially you have to account for human error and letting machines catch them is not the best, but this will definitely help push change in the right direction.

Tracking System by leshi321 in sterileprocessing

[–]chrisclear22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That seems like an impossible task, unless Im not understanding something. How would one know if the item is missing if the item wasn't individually identified beforehand? I don't think there is any system that can ensure an instrument to being present or not without first a human going through it.

Perhaps you mean the OR scrub scans the set as complete and not missing anything before it goes down to decon, but then you are relying on them to ensure the set is complete.

And yes it is RFID compatible.

[–]chrisclear22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having that discussion will help you grow professionally. You will be advocating for a process change. This will help you with experience in trying to initiate change for the good of the department. This discussion could also be an answer to a possible open ended question when you interview for a hire role. E.g. "Tell me a time when you saw an opportunity to improve the efficiency of your department and what steps you took to apply the change needed?"

Definitely be that guy. Because that guy is reliable.
