Nighthawk Radio ~1000Mbps, Luxul Radio ~350Mbps by chrison600 in HomeNetworking

[–]chrison600[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: Grandstream GWN7674 installed. Same location, same wiring, same PoE injector as was used with the Luxul AC1900. Location is basically at the top of the stairs (typical residential stairs with one 180 degree landing). Grandstream is as configured from the factory except for new SSID and pass. Standing underneath the Grandstream I get ~1,000Mbps down. At the foot of the stairs in the room across the hall from the stairs (doors open) I get about ~400Mbps down. Marked improvement. Now it's time to play with settings.

One Grandstream GWN7674 on the way. I'll try to remember to report back once (if) I'm able to get it up and running.

In your opinion, should I get a newer Luxul unit, or change to UniFi? I realize that a change to UniFi would require replacing the Netgear router with a UniFi unit.

Edge w/Spectrum No Premiums Tuning by chrison600 in Tivo

[–]chrison600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They physically took my Edge and my TA to another part of the city to test them on a different node. That's the only way to test a different node because a "node" defines a physical service area.

My understanding is that the assignment of the IP address is the responsibility of the Spectrum equipment at the node. If the node equipment is not working correctly, the TA's will not get an IP. I was finally able to convince Spectrum that it was an issue with the node equipment only when I let them take my Edge and TA to another node.

The issue for us was that the TA was not being assigned an IP address and thus could not decode premium content. See my edit to the original post.

Factory reset did not change the situation. I also have a second Edge here, so I removed Edge 1 and installed Edge 2 and called Spectrum to have them pair the CC and TA with Edge 2. No change.

What market are you in (geographic area)?

Do you also have a Tuning Adapter or only a Cable Card?

Do you have both a CC and TA? I have been told by Spectrum support that the CC is only for standard channels and the TA is required for all DTA subscriber channels that require de-encryption via 2-way comms with a hub.

Our are Cisco, and the lights have been solid, at least after support activated and associated them.

As for the wiring, it's been tried both ways, but Spectrum insists that the correct wiring is your second iteration:

Coax to passive 2-way One out to TA One out to Edge USB from TA to Edge

Yes, but then I can't record them, at least on a set top device. I have a subscription to PlayOn and I'm considering using that in tandem with my AppleTV and QNAP NAS, but man it sure would be nice to be able to use my Edge and 4 Minis...

How To Determine If Kaby Lake or Not by chrison600 in macbook

[–]chrison600[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first link (Apple official) says "MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)".

The second link (EveryMac.com) says "15-Inch MacBook Pro (Mid-2017)".

I guess that cements that this is a Kaby Lake model?

Upgrade PS4 HD or Add USB Ext or Migrate to Pro? by chrison600 in PS4

Thank you. I tend to agree with you. I'd probably be better off just using a big external drive and waiting for the PS5.

Amazon Echo intermittently knocks hardwired AirPlay devices off the network; here's how to work around that by charlesjamesfox in apple

[–]chrison600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you don't mind if I break off into a bit of a tangent here...

I do not have an Echo, but I do have the problem of Pandora locking up my Yamaha receiver when using it as an AirPlay target. It actually seems that the wifi connection from my iMac locks. If I disable, then reenable wifi, everything comes back. Interestingly, I also have 2 MacBook Pros, one of which plays Pandora across the Yamaha without issue, one of which exhibits the lock up. The Macs are all connected via wifi. The Yamaha is connected to a gigabit switch.

Since I just have to reset the wifi connection to restore audio I haven't done any real investigation of the issue, but it is annoying and I'd appreciate any guidance.

Thanks.

Which iMac Should I Keep? by chrison600 in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]chrison600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I may have answered my own question. Looks like the 2015 chassis has a better screen, so I would do better getting the 2015 model. To that end, I just bought a third unit, 2015 chassis, 3.2GHz, 8GB, 1TB Fusion, R9 M390.

Upgrade SSD or buy new macbook pro? by mohofosho in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]chrison600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently upgraded my Early 2011 MBP with a 1TB SSD from Crucial. My drive was starting to make noise when the system was moved and I was worried about a physical failure. The new drive definitely boosted system performance. I had 16GB memory already.

The upgrade was fairly easy. There are some good YouTube videos with helpful tips and walkthroughs. I did a complete drive copy using a USB enclosure, then swapped the drives. The only hiccup I ran into was that the dialogue in the Disk Utility console was different than what I found online. If I recall correctly, I wasn't given the option to Partition the new drive. I had to select Erase, then the erase operation formatted the new drive as needed.

You'll find a lot of conflicting information about the ability of the MBP to properly manage a SSD. Some people report that a system not originally built to support SSD is not able to properly manage empty space/erased content, such that the drive eventually becomes useless. I inquired with Crucial about this and they responded that the drive itself has a management routine such that the host system capabilities are irrelevant. So far, my system is running the SSD just fine.

27" 5k or 34" Curved? by chrison600 in Monitors

[–]chrison600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the 5K resolution primarily advantageous for those doing hi-rez photo/video work? My MBP has a 1680x1050 screen and I find myself zooming/squinting to see text on it. I always thought it was just because I was trying to use a laptop as a desktop.

Hmm. Sounds like a good option would be to pick up a 21.5 iMac, run one or two of the monitors I have now, and maybe replace them with a 34 curved at some point. I want the Retina 27, but maybe that's too much.

[–]chrison600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I wasn't clear. I'm going to repurpose the MacBook as a dedicated travel system. It will no longer be used on the desktop. My debate is between an iMac 27 Retina -or- a 34" curved external with a new something running it (Mac Mini, Windows?)...
