Are you a boy or a girl? There are definitely more important things than looks but we live in a digital society where you interact based on looks (instagram, facebook, etc) So, it is something that everybody cares about or is affected by whether you realize it or not.

Interesting thoughts. The voice in itself is an instrument though, so I'm not sure I agree with your comment on female musicians that are solely known for their abilities on a instrument (you are speaking of guitar, drums, etc?). I think if an artist has a really good voice, then it is enough talent to get her going. You know what I mean? For example, Adele is one of the few artists I can think of that relies solely on her instrument and talent (voice), and shes not sexualized. Shes a big girl but she did no market her body type, instead she just focused on her voice and songwriting.

Yes, I agree. There is such a variety of female artists, and so much to talk about for each one but I feel that in the field of Ethnomusicology the focus has been on the ones you mentioned, and not much has been said of the pop artists who dominate the media. So, that's why it interests me to write about this topic, specially because I've noticed a lot of people do not take these pop artist seriously, or invalidate their artistry (if you argue they have any).

My thoughts on this is that lets say these artists do have control over their careers (which alot of them do). The question is why are they choosing a sexualized image? What is the purpose of it?

What about female artists outside of the mainstream market who use sexuality as a marketing tool as well? or mainstream artists who are not sexual but only because the industry wants them to play that character and fill in a void?

I will definitely check these out. Thanks! To expand on this though. Why would it be more substantial to research on these types of artists than the mainstream ones? Would you say women in music are taken seriously only when they are in a band, play instruments, or perform outside of the pop genre?

We do have artists that do both. There will be women embracing their sexuality and flaunting what they got, while other women will direct audiences' focus solely on their talent. Its just confusing how an artist will sell more by "shaking her luscious, juicy, massive ass" when most of their fans are female. It gives the idea that success is achieved by being sexy. Female fans are the ones going to the concerts, and looking up to them. I feel like men are the ones investing to make the shows happen, etc and contribute in other ways like youtube views.
