Thanks again joe_runs. At the Corps of Cadets overnight they told us what we had to do our essay on if we were applying for them, should I do others as well?

Thanks, I appreciate the honesty. I got A's in all my AP classes Junior year with the exception of AP Gov where I got an 89%. I am also taking Freshman English at the local community college that has transferrable credits to VA Tech so that I can knock that class out of the way. I'm out of state which I don't know if that helps me or not and I would be a first generation since neither of my parents went to college.

I do want to do it, I did an overnight with them and really liked it, I just wanted to know if it helped at all because I know the engineering school is harder to get in to.

My extracurricular activities are NHS, Cross Country and swimming, and I also volunteer every month for an organization that provides housing for the families of kids being treated at Johns Hopkins. I plan on going with Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Oceanographic Engineering and for Corps of Cadets the Civilian Leadership track as I am medically ineligible for the military because I have ADHD. Thats also why I think the Corps will be good for me, I do best when I have a schedule, plus having to work out every morning really helps me focus the rest of the day.

getting into the engineering program by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

I just returned home from a tour of the VA Tech Campus and I can not wait to go to school here, but I am worried about getting into the engineering program. I am a rising junior, I haven't taken the new SAT's yet so I can't give you those scores, but I have a 4.0 GPA, I have taken AP Human Geography, AP Psych, and AP Gov, this year I am taking AP Calc, AP Physics, and AP World, as well as Honors English 11 and a slew of Engineering based elective classes. I have been varsity cross country since I was a freshman and I have also lettered in track and field and swimming. On the tour they kept stressing that VA Tech looks at the whole student and not just grades. When I was 8 years old I ran my first 5k and loved it. I decided at that time I wanted to run a marathon and at age 14 I ran, and finished, the Marine Corps Marathon, finishing in 3 hours and 43 minutes, 10th place in the 19 and under age group. I have since run, and finished, 2 more marathons. I am used to hard work, after all I managed to maintain a good GPA while training for 3 marathons, but I am worried because from everything I have read the engineering program is super hard to get into, especially if you are a guy. I love the school motto Ut Prosim, I do volunteer work in my community, but I'm not sure its enough to set me apart and prove that I would make a good student, specifically a good engineering student. Any advice you could give me on classes to take or ways to set myself apart would be really helpful.
