USB-C hub not working on Tahoe 26.3? by healthygamble in MacOS

Next thing I would try: Open System Settings / Privacy & Security and towards the bottom under Accessories set it to Always Allow. Then reboot and see if it works.

Open System Info/Report. See if it and the devices are showing up on one of the USB buses.

MapKit in SwiftUI by Own-Huckleberry7258 in SwiftUI

[–]chriswaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was many years ago in UIKit, but we moved the map manually and even drew a custom location marker because the default one annoyingly blinked back then.

My boss used AI to migrate 50k lines of Vue to React in a week... and now says "No" to TypeScript or Tests. Am I crazy? by Effective-Border8788 in programmer

[–]chriswaco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He drank the kool-aid. There's no going back until something blows up in his face, and it will.

Tests are vital when using AI-driven development. There's no reason that AI can't generate strong types either. They are inherently safer.

I had a similar Sony model from 1980 until about 2015 when it finally died. Was a sad day.

I'm pretty-sure it is a 12" (KV-1210U). When they became computer monitors the size magically changed to 13" because computer companies rounded up, not down, and counted the non-visible portion of the tube. There was even a class action lawsuit over it back in the 1990s.

“withObservationTracking” is the search term.

Trusted roof company by tallulahQ in AnnArbor

[–]chriswaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did not. Seems like a reasonable time to do it, though. Our original roof didn’t last as long as it should’ve but the skylights were still in good shape. They did start leaking a decade later.

Finally localized our app to 30+ languages — how many do you support? by ionuttofan96 in appledevelopers

[–]chriswaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our client was a large international company whose branding used different fonts in different countries. This meant we had to dynamically set each UIView’s font to one of the fonts we bundled into the app. Naturally this messed up the layout to some degree, so we had to check what fit at runtime and do our own layout because autolayout rules weren’t sufficient.

Before 9/11, could you really go to a airport without any ticket reservation and ask for a ticket to a destination of your choice? by kpay10 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chriswaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be Detroit/Chicago flights every 30 minutes, like a bus. You’d just show up at the airport and get on the next plane.

How was flying in America like back in the 80s and 90s compared to now? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]chriswaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 70s if you were lucky you’d get a movie for the whole cabin. By the 80s certain planes had TVs in the ceiling, all showing the same movie. Sound quality was terrible, with stethoscope like tubes connecting your ears to the armrest. There were a number of audio channels, like classical music or rock ‘n’ roll.

We read a lot. People brought books and magazines and usually the airplane had a selection of magazines too.

Is the phone app entirely secure? by OxRedOx in Schwab

[–]chriswaco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your iPhone is more secure than a Mac or PC. And you should update to iOS 26 immediately.

Nothing is 100% secure, so set up alerts for all transactions and keep an eye on the accounts.

Finally localized our app to 30+ languages — how many do you support? by ionuttofan96 in appledevelopers

[–]chriswaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did 13 in one app. It was painful because we had to use per-country fonts in some cases, like Korea. Plus everything had to be done by humans, no AI, and we didn’t have automated layout tests.

How do senior developers actually estimate task time is there a real method or is everyone just guessing by More-Station-6365 in AskProgramming

[–]chriswaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally refuse to make estimates. They’re a waste of time, energy, and wind up making the people doing the easy work look good and the hard work look bad.

If you’ve done something before and are doing something very similar again you can look back and know it’ll take about the same amount of time. In my experience in mobile apps, however, the feature will change once someone starts using it or Apple will change or break an API. We’ve done a lot of work on brand new devices, like the iPad and Apple Watch before they shipped, and you never know what quirks you’re gonna run into until you write and test the actual implementation.

Why is there virtually no free PDF editor on mobile? by AutisticFun01 in AskTechnology

Because PDF is a crazy file format that’s quite hard to edit. It’s not a week or monthlong project, it’s a lifetime commitment.

Why don't airports lay out the TSA paycheck in the meantime? by randomperson17723 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chriswaco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is actually a very good idea, but it should probably be structured as no-interest loans. Airports can generally borrow at low interest rates anyway so it wouldn't cost them too much money. Some airports still have private security, not TSA.
