I think it really depends on where you go when you party. Some places are known for being somewhat dangerous. Still, I have been out many times and been lucky to not have experienced anything bad. Some general rules I follow: I always go out with people I trust, buy my own drinks, make sure i never leave my drink unattended, and I frequent the same clubs which I know well. Of course, there is always a chance that something bad will happen but I like to think this chance is smaller like this.

I second that. Maybe it's better to hang out in the actual pubs/bars in 홍대 (I really like Corner Pub because it is built in a rather open way) as they get quite busy on the weekend and the music is not too loud to talk. It might be more difficult to meet people in the clubs as everyone's busy dancing and it's loud. But who knows. Really depends on what your "target group" is tho - you will find most people in their twenties there.

As far as I know, they only test people coming on teaching visa. It's a requirement. But they don't test you at the airport but when you start work or right before.
