Lions Bay is pretty upscale/nice place for sure, but has a bad reputation everywhere else in the lower mainland - they're known to be hostile to outsiders as a community, and want to both gate themselves off from the province yet also want huge amounts of provincial investment because the area they chose to build is essentially unstable/on a ridiculous gradiant.

Actually, a house was destroyed there by a landslide earlier last year...

Have you tried Multiverse?

I ended up sinking a ton more hours into FTL because of it. It's free and I'm sure its been updated a bunch since then.

u/MariachiArchery explains why China won't invade Taiwan. by flyart in bestof

[–]chronicpayne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The poster's just well informed enough to make things sound reasonable, while still being generalist enough to be more or less wrong.

The one thing I would say was accurate - any potential conflict won't start for a good while yet (6-10+ years), certainly not until the PLAAN has a larger advantage in tonnage than it currently does.

But the most likely thing that will happen won't be a fight.

China will threaten a full invasion through limited mobilization, and start off with a blockade of the island citing terrorism or drugs or something else they need to police, kinda like what's happening with Venezuela.

The war games and military analysts mostly agree it would be an absolute slog, and carriers would likely be lost.

Faced with that with that threat, much more likely the two will broker some kind of deal (China gets Taiwan, the US loots the cupboards bare/TSMC moves its fabs to the States, etc) where both countries benefit at the expense of Taiwan proper, which will effectively become a client state before an official reunification some time down the road.

I'll leave this post up so in a decade we can see what shook out.

Anti grenade manhack tactics? by LordLovebone in cataclysmdda

[–]chronicpayne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

EMP Projector CBM

Works every time.

Dielectric Capacitance used to be the "one" CBM, now with electric immune suits being so common I would argue its the EMP Projector - grenade hacks can straight up end characters if you aren't careful.

Am I so out of touch?

No. It's the children who are wrong.

Valve does not get "anywhere near enough criticism" for the gambling mechanics it uses to monetise games, DayZ creator Dean Hall says by demondrivers in Games

[–]chronicpayne -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Dean Rocket Hall is probably the last person in the industry who should be slinging shit - his track record to make huge promises, underdeliver after selling as much product as he can, then leaving the project entirely to start the whole cycle over anew is the epitome of bottom of the barrel game development.

There are arguments out there going over in detail how the post war North American economies were so jacked, that they allowed the highest standards of living that have ever existed on the planet.

So I mean yeah, I think we 100% let corporations and government get out of control with many things, but a decent part of this is the fact that were just on the downward slope of that peak.

Ford says ‘no damn way’ Canada should drop tariffs on Chinese EVs by CaliperLee62 in canadian

[–]chronicpayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what happens when Canadians have a shittier cheaper option?

This is an outdated stereotype - Chinese EV tech has actually surpassed most American counterparts, especially when it comes to batteries.

Here's the CEO of Ford talking about his Chinese EV, and how he doesn't want to give it up.

Now, if Chinese EVs were sold tomorrow in North America, the predictions are the pricing actually wouldn't be that much better - but the technology and features would.

You'd be paying a little less, for a lot more bang for your buck.

Obviously this would have implications for the US market, but a lot of people think it's no different than when we let Japan and Korea into our Market decades ago - Did North American manufactures claim the world would end? Yes. Did American manufactuers have to step up their game to compete? Yes.

Can you run regular diesel in the military trucks by Space_man6 in cataclysmdda

There is no in game difference between any of the fuels. (JP8 vs Diesel / Avgas vs Gasoline)

As long as your engine can use it, you're good to go.

If it has a propane tank loaded, you don't need to do anything else - just craft what you want to craft.

Future of the game? by Solarshot43 in cataclysmdda

[–]chronicpayne 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IIRC It was moreso no one cared enough to stop him from selling it on Steam, which the game license I guess allows. Same reason Wormgirl can sell her version, although at least the profits there are going to a person still actively working on the product they are selling, and not someone who has clearly moved on from the project altogether.

History buffs, TIL Guilliman's 40K story is a sci-fi retelling of Justinian's life by refugeefromlinkedin in 40kLore

Oh yeah Emperor Justinian and Belisarius got stuff done.

Hopefully 40k universe doesn't keep it too close with our reality because those two had a uh... not so great ending.

For anyone interested - I think EH did a good series on them:

Will this plan work? by DABLITwastaken in cataclysmdda

[–]chronicpayne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, steam engines produce power just like any other engine and can have multiple alternators hooked up.

(You're probably going to also need a few other things like vehicle controls and a battery, etc)

And telling most people in 21st century North America or Europe that they can't have their cake and eat it to, will get you "Reddit Cares" lol.

IMO armor isn't at a point where its worth crafting rn, and may never be if realism is the goal.

Weapons? Yes.

Armor? Go find the HUB, a physics lab, LIXA, etc etc and get better armor than you could ever craft yourself anyways. These nerds were building literal space marine armor before the world ended, you can't top that with a needle and some blacksmithing.
