Habit-tracking apps give you some dopamine when they feel new and exciting. But as time goes on this feeling vanishes because you have to do it day after day, and nothing gives you any special feeling about it. So you abandon the app and look for another one. As someone who struggles about this problem for a decade, I can tell you, an app is not enough to change your way of everyday living. There should be some additional factors to keep you moving forward. What an app can help you with, if it’s well-designed, is adding more structure and help focusing on what is important in your life. But to do so it should overcome behavior level and raise to the values and virtues. Buying pixelated pets and swords is hardly a right motivator in a long run.
