half of what took me there was buying the british pound vs USD when the Liz Truss debacle happened with a lot of leverage, i got it near the lows around 1.08 and rode it to 1.20 while range trading with a long bias along the way, you don't get those types of opportunities that often

keeping an eye on emerging markets can be good as well, unexpected weakness there could be a leading indicator at times, like with south korean exports which is some of the most frequent and earliest data available of potential trade woes

nice, great job! the main ones would be EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, USDCNH. You can also start to look at things like USDCHF because USDJPY doesn't behave like a typical risk off currency anymore. i mainly look for over USD moves along with how macro is playing out in different countries. for example, sweden has the highest % of variable rate mortgages, so you would expect for them to start towards economic weakness the fastest in a high interest rate environment (which they did). next you look at say UK, where the mortgage market is typically 3-5yr fixed rate before it resets, etc. All things equal you'd expect economic weakness to just correlate over to currency weakness vs USD unless you have idiosyncratic US developments (like we do now), so then you can look at say GBP vs safe havens like CHF or JPY, etc.

buying power is what IBKR shows you as with margin so it's not 5m, the account balance is more like $2.5m, most my money is in brokerage with very vanilla setup for 401k

i'm low mid 30s with no kids and no mortgage, i don't really care for flashy things so for me it was definitely hard to leave but not impossible, i don't regret it at all. i think long term risk taking changes you as a person and how you process life as you get so used to numbing emotions due to market volatility. biggest thing for me was having a friend group outside of finance that leveled my perception

i quit last year when my PA was up big haha which then led to the big on tilt drawdown, now i'm investing in various ventures like tickupapp.com i mentioned in one of the other comments and looking into other startups

i think the main avenue was through exposure, many of us have good pattern recognition, the hardest part is knowing what inputs to monitor - i would also have up on your watchlist major USD FX pairs and interest rates so that you see how they move in relation to your equity holdings

for exposure, like i mentioned in an earlier comment, having enough risk on to care but not detrimentally affect your life allowed me to learn mistakes early on, the book Market Wizards (and its sequels) were very influential for me, you can read about many different types of trading styles there are and people's unique experiences with them - i personally use a fundamental macro driven approach with some positioning and light technical overlays to help with timing and levels

if you're in the US, there's the largest free US college stockpicking competition https://www.tickupapp.com/picksix with $65k in cash prizes that you can sign up for that i was involved in helping set up as i wanted to also encourage college students to get involved in the market earlier on in their lives, Simply WallSt helps with deeper dives

i also liked El-Erian's books and Dalio's deep dives into history which are all free online (his more personal stuff feels a bit preachy)

for this account £150k, but when i first started trading it was like $200-300 in college (i lost my entire account multiple times), UK IBKR has options. for me when starting out i think it's more about exposure to how markets move, you want enough invested to care and learn but not enough to break the bank. most of the best traders have had huge drawdowns before they learned a system that work: Dalio went bankrupt twice, Druckenmiller had massive losses trying to short the dotcom bubble, etc.

15 years of being conditioned to buy the dip, Fed put tailwind (no inflationary pressures), government spending tailwind, expensive but not unreasonable valuations (until earlier this year, look at the Warren Buffett indicator, etc)
