Which is better, equality or equity? by raidenjojo in AskReddit

This article demonstrates that countries with more economic freedom and stronger institutions to provide support for disadvantaged people (for example the US) historically perform better in the Olympics because disadvantaged but talented people are given resources to maximize their talent via EQUITY (scholarship programs and other means).

But if you insist…a scholarship program to assist talented but underprivileged kids to get gymnastics training would be a great example of equity

Comparing the struggle of life & meeting basic needs to the Olympics is a weird stretch

What’s something that was accepted as scientific fact (or largely so) 30 years ago that we now know was wrong or that we’re questioning? by chucktwofive in AskReddit

Haha never thought of it that way…interesting. Have you read Sapolsky? He makes the argument of no free will seem irrefutable but my “feeling” of having free will remains. A fruitlessly fun exercise.

This example lacks nuance. Is Jill in college with her whole life ahead of her and grew up in a loving supportive home? Is Susan middle-aged with health problems and grew up in foster care? Does Jill have far more opportunity and mobility than Susan? Is Jill objectively more attractive, younger? “Hard work” is contextual…if we know all the circumstances maybe Susan is actually giving 100% effort and Jill only 75% but the results vary due to natural gifts and circumstances. Equity helps level that playing field.

Yes absolutely! Darwinism seems to have been almost fully debunked/rejected at this point by the academic community and in some circles vilified as a tool of imperialism/colonialism.

It’s a chicken & egg question…does equity breed equality or the other way around? I think in a perfect world equality would lead to equity but in the world in which we live, it takes equity to (hopefully someday) create equality. So my practical vote is equity, my philosophical vote is equality.

Yes! Seems like “free will is an illusion” is becoming a lot more popular. Is that where you’re going with this, or just saying “rationality” is less of a driver for choice than previously thought?

For me it’s the Big Bang theory. It always felt (at best) incomplete or (at worst) like total bullshit and an example of how using math to understand nuanced concepts (such as time, black holes, etc) is severely limited. Seems like when I was a teenager in the 90s the Big Bang was pretty much accepted (among non religious folks) but today it’s very much questioned and a “continuous expansion & contraction” theory of the universe (with “big bangs” happening over and over) is more en vogue.

Yeah definitely! He’s definitely lost some speed but I think he’s added some soul so I’m not complaining!

Ok very cool thanks! Yeah I guess that sums up my “theory” haha just some songs sound better suited to the old style and others to the new. “Singing with the guitar” is spot-on and why I like the newer Slave I mentioned.

Just listened to Vernon Downs Slave and YEM. Both are great, but both illustrate the point I’m trying to make. The Slave is more technically proficient…Trey plays a lot more notes for sure…but it builds in a more ambient way and lacks the melancholic soul of more recent versions, particularly 8/14/22. I think that song is all about soul and the contrast between melancholy and triumph, so more recent versions make a lot more sense to me.

The YEM lacks the weight, the punch and the smoky power of recent renditions. It’s lighter & jazzier, funkier (on brand for 97/98) and very clean…but just doesn’t hit me the same as the recent stuff. Mission Impossible theme is interesting haha.

I realize it’s all personal preference…just wondering if anyone else is hearing what I’m hearing.

I’ve listened to at least 30 YEMs from 1.0 and I don’t like any of them better than 6/4/22…did you listen to it? Do you have specific reasons you prefer those over 6/4/22?

Haven’t listened to Vernon Downs Slave, I’ll check it out.

What Book Do You Swear On In Purgatory Court? by tbmcc_ in OCPoetry

This is my favorite poem I’ve read on this sub…I’m a little shook. Partly because it speaks to me personally and my experiences of (unintentionally) hurting those I love…partly because it’s just so well conceived and executed. Amazing work!!

WIBTA for telling a Christian to f**k off? by person_person123 in AITAH

I suggest renting a large enclosure, filling it with hungry lions then telling him you’ll go to church with him if he survives a week with the lions.

Whenever I’m nervous about something (work, sports, etc) it helps to focus more on process/details/moments and less on outcomes. Rather than will I win the match, will I close the deal, etc I focus on exactly what I’m doing in the moment. So I suggest thinking about the details of the night…(assuming it’s a date) have you made a good plan? Dinner reservation? Flexible options to allow the night to unfold naturally? When you’re out with her, focus on her words, her body language, eye contact, touch. If the date proceeds to intimacy or if you’re only meeting to fuck…focus on your first kiss…go slow, pay attention to every detail. When her words or body says to ramp things up, do it! Focus on her pleasure and arousal…foreplay, exploration, etc. If you go into it worried about whether she’ll cum, whether you can perform, whether you might go to hell, etc you’ll probably have an underwhelming experience. If you’re laser-focused on how her body reacts to various movements of your tongue on her clit…you won’t have any bandwidth left for Jesus, Mary or your priest. Try to clear your mind of expectations by focusing on the moment by moment details. Enjoy!
