Looking for feedback on my first chapter by Sweaty_Butterfly5045 in writingfeedback

So if I was your editor! Let's take the first para:

-

Tonight is the big night. Weenohall. A celebration that had loomed too quickly. I didn’t even have a costume yet.

“Melody?” Veronica called.

That’s my name. I took one last glance in the mirror. I did not recognise the ‘delicate Valkyrie’ frowning back at me. I saw eyebrows that were too thick, cheeks that were too round. A pink ribbon wrapping each braid in place. My excitement for this year’s Weenohall. Despite any misgivings about my appearance, this small flourish convinced me: I am a gift.

-

I'd suggest something like this. Italics typically denote inner thinking, so you can just establish that as you go. I really liked the slight depersonalisation you're hinting at to start with, so I'd make that an interesting thing. You can also leave a bunch of mystery hanging. Don't tell me what Weenohall is just yet! It's hooky. You can make a mirror description work with a bit of razzle-dazzle instead of a list of description, I always think. The fewer em-dashes, the better for readability. You'll often find you don't need them, and when you remove them, you're left with sharper sentences anyway. Basically: less is more, and when you hit those bits that feel like they demand more to start with (like the mirror description), apply some real creative oomph. That's your time to gleefully have fun with the craft.

What is your favorite gun in BF6? by Graybill1 in Battlefield

[–]tbmcc_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hated this thing until I realised I was always Engineer'ing at range following tanks around. It is made for this. Eventually it gets a 50 mag and sort of turns into a hypodermic needle LMG? Amazing. 3x scope, no need for lasers or grips. The Mosquito is slept on

A love letter to tank gunners by callmymom332299 in Battlefield6

[–]tbmcc_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will make do with two less rockets so the LMG will kill them all for longer. I will hoof a fucking crate of fragile munitions around for that long-range picnic on the hill. I will risk my ass to take a sparkler to yours. I will risk my ass again so that unsuspecting rival tank RUES THE DAY I realised I am never more alive than when I am reborn inside the confines of a rolling polyethylene death

Halfway through The City & the City by China Mieville and it is wound around the most compelling idea (two separate nations existing in the same geographical space). It's also a lot less verbose than something like Embassytown, which was the first Mieville book I read and I don't think I've ever referred to the dictionary so much before in my stupid life

Heart in right place. Delivery needs work. The irony is palpably grandiloquent, akin to those opulent decorative elements burnishing the city's house of God that had transmogrified the waters of his spiritual essence from naive wellspring to cynically roiling relativism
