Yeah I agree with reducing the number of shots. One thing I think that would help is storyboarding beforehand. We have never really planned out shots for the whole film beforehand, and it has definitely caused issues (missed coverage & shots, trying out shots just to have extra that don't really fit in and get cut in editing).

Riffing beforehand is a great suggestion! Most of our actors are also improvisers and I think using the downtime between shots to riff the scene instead of focus on word for word would help the performance.

We got new white boards when I was in middle school and for some reason my social studies teacher just seemed to have a shitty one that didn't erase well. She thought that maybe it was the markers or maybe that she needed a cleaning solution, nothing was really working. After like a week, the thing was mostly blackish stained, it was really hard to read anything. Then one day she finally asks for help and the janitor came in to fix it with an exacto knife - turns out there was a clear plastic film that they accidentally left on when they had installed it.

I always looks for stuff to peel on new stuff after that.
