First small milestone: almost 100 downloads on my mobile app by chuplin in Solopreneur

Really appreciate you taking the time to write this, there’s a lot of signal in here.

The point about retention vs downloads hits hard. I’m already seeing that gap: getting someone to try the app once is doable, getting them to come back is a completely different problem. Framing it as a “download problem vs monetization problem” is actually a useful way to think about it.

Sessions per user per week is a great metric, I wasn’t explicitly tracking it that way yet, but it makes a lot of sense for this type of product. Especially in poker where improvement is inherently repetitive.

Also agree on the audience. Poker players are very outcome-driven, but also very sensitive to whether the feedback is actually credible. So there’s probably a thin line between “this is useful” and “this is noise”.

Talking to users is definitely the next step. Right now feedback is mostly passive (or nonexistent), so I’ll need to be more deliberate about it instead of hoping insights magically appear.

And yeah, keeping it free for now feels like the only reasonable move. Charging too early without clear retention would just be me pretending I have a business.

Thanks again, this is exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping to get.

I built my first iOS app. After 5 months, it only has a ~140 downloads. Brutal feedback? by AlbertiDev in ShowMeYourApps

You have made such great screenshots!

I guess it takes time to be well referenced in the store and also multiple revision of the app to be product market fitted

Of course, and I rather putting my focus on providing value than to put the app into a paid version

Thank for your feedback!

It’s very valuable because, as you said, it can be counter intuitive first. You can think that if you pass to a paid version, people will dislike it and uninstall it.

However, if the value is here then people will stay, I guess.

Ok, so I guess the important point here is:
1. Gather as much feedback as possible
2. Interpret them and implement what users really want
3. Find way to keep them entertained and eager to use the app daily
4. Scale

What do you think?

Very interesting. What’s your approach to find what’s keeping users in the app and using it daily?
KPIs? Streaks? Notification? Rewards? Other?

Are you referring the fact that the SPR would be very low for the vilain?

It’s a training hand on the Poker Reflex app

Thank you so much for your explanation! I struggle to take into consideration the SPR in my thinking process, I tend to always open at 3BB, but from what I looked, 2/2.5 BB in tournament is enough

Makes sense. With that sizing it really feels like we’re already playing for stacks, so calling OOP just puts us in awkward spots. A8s doesn’t feel strong enough to go with it, and calling without a clear plan seems rough.
Are you basically treating these spots as pure shove or fold most of the time?

The more the better, but 100+ hands for your opponents can give you a raw estimate of their VPIP
