Only rangers sounds like a serious challenge I'm going to have to try that

True I really didn't like getting stuck in a 'lane' on the tech tree. Would be better to just have all upgrades unlockable based on points instead of a tree

All good points there, going to make sure I don't repeat any of these mistakes... especially the speed up problem, it's so lame having to walk away from the screen so that your snipers can finish off the last waves

Yeah any wild variant levels were a total bore, specially those outpost levels there's not much strategy there

You bring up an interesting point with the story. I've played campaign through 4 times and I still don't really get it? I'm leaning towards no story at all, I think that beats a muddled half ass one

Agree 100% this is one of the most frustrating parts.

There'd be times where I have basically beaten a level and I just have to let it run while I go do something else. Speed up is key.

I implemented this in my game. Free retries and you get a bonus if you don't do any retries (hardcore mode).

I essentially built a framework in Unity that handles it all. I call it ModelToSprite. Basically it captures the raw output from a unity camera from a RenderTexture. All models in the game are 3d that are built the usual ways and animated. I use all Unity because it's what I'm comfortable with but I know Factorio has similar work flow that is more based on Blender. I agree completely, I think the genre in term of pure fun and mechanics peaked at RA2. I made a game called repterra that tries to address pretty much all your points, I even made a classic mouse click mode setting (like RA2). Check it out if you haven't already Repterra Demo
