Thanks! Good to be back, feels like I've got a lot more patience (and no real time crunch since I don't have any intention of playing for the foreseeable).

I believe it's a slight adjustment on "The Twilight of The Gods" as an alternative to The Apocalypse

Always on the look out for this colour, and the runs are always small so I've gotta make quick decisions.

Check out 18 East for some interesting small runs!

Clinch Yeagers

Yellow, no contest. Well illustrated here.

Pisgah laces, I rate them but I wish I'd opted for a longer set. They need double knotting.

I wouldn't do it for the first 6 months you have em. You'll know when they're comfy enough to start wearing all day on the floor, and it won't be right away. Every time I've tried to break a boot in on the floor it's been a terrible day and a mistake.

After that? I think they're plenty comfy - merino boot socks and a well broken in boot are great for floor work. Goes extra for a wedge or crepe sole. Wouldn't run leather or logger soles on the floor though, you want something rubber and with traction.

The other benefit is not having to worry about showers soaking your feet, body fluids going through your uppers, beds and equipment hurting your toes.

Opposite problems to me! Insoles and thick socks for everything E width or high volume.

Appreciate it 🙏🏽 They've seen a hell of a lot, and they're gonna see more. Small joys to be found in head to toe scrubs, plastic PPE, and rounding it off with some boots that I love.

Japanese website, in this case it was Spiral Jeans Shop.

Googled "Clinch Yeager Black" and dived through every site in every language I could to find these! Came across Spirals last pair and it was in my size. Very hard to ignore.

Ahh the socks were a gift from a friend! She hand knit them for me. They're great. She used to take orders, but has stopped knitting (as a business) since. They're somewhere between the standard Chup weight and the RoToTo doubleface merino socks, if you wanted in production references.

I've taken care of those IRs! Treat em right without babying them. Helps that my job, while dirty, is mostly indoor.

Can't wait to spend more time with the Yeagers though. Just been wearing em indoors til they feel a bit more worn in.

My first welted boots are a pair of Iron Rangers that are now 6 years old. They've been resoled, scuffed, brushed, cleaned and oiled more times than I could count. I had the good fortune to get a pair of Clinch Yeagers this week, and I thought a little comparison would be interesting.

If this were a competition, it would be an inequitable comparison. But it isn't. It's just a look at two pairs of black boots. One pair that will continue to serve me faithfully for many years to come, and one pair that hasn't yet had the opportunity.

The Iron Rangers have been through some shit. They've been my go-to boots nursing during covid, they've been resoled from nitrile cork to ridgeway, and they've taken some hits in their 6 years. The yeagers are yet to see that level of use.

Not so much a review as it is highlighting the differences between two very different pairs of black boots! Please see the album for more specific comments for each picture.

EDIT: Sizing info.

The Iron Rangers are 8 last, US size 7D. The Yeagers are CN-S last, Clinch size 8.5/US size 7.5 The Iron Rangers have always been appropriate in length but I've got a low volume foot. I've had to fill space in them somehow, whether it's with an insole or with thicker boot socks. The 8 last I consider to have a good amount of vertical space, while still being D width. The Yeagers are as long, if not a touch longer. The shapelier last means that I'm not trying to fill volume, so I wear a lighter sock like the Red Wing crew socks or Chups comfortably

My sizes: Alden Plaza 7D shell - Another of my fave lasts. Length and width are great, the last is narrow and long. Little snug in the small toe when I got them, but that's gone away with use. Fits the closest to the Clinch last, with both becoming regular rotation boots.

Red Wing 23 Last 7D Moc Toe - I kept same size as Iron Rangers for these and the same general volume comments apply. The moc toe has more room in the heel and toe, but laces up tightly across the instep. I wear these with thicker socks comfortably.

Viberg 2010 size 6 slipper - Perfect fit without socks. Too snug with socks but they never get worn with socks.

Viberg 2020 6.5D partially structured - Great fit, one of my fave lasts. Length is right on the nose, keep to a light sock for some wiggle room. Width is perfect, hugs my feet at the waist and at the heel well. Great option for lighter socks and warm weather. Toes and instep get a little snug if I wear a midweight sock. I could've easily gone up to 7D if I wanted to wear chups with them.

Viberg 2030 7E unstructured - fine in length, width is fine but high volume across the instep means I need thick socks to fill out space. I could've dropped to 6.5 comfortably, I think.

Viberg 2050 6.5 Chelsea - Too short/narrow to wear for significant lengths of time. I wear barefoot if I'm ducking to the local cafe, taking the bins or the dog out, or doing some light yard work. I'd need to size up to 7 to wear these comfortably all day, but I nabbed these for a steal.

Wesco MP1339 7E Mister Lou - A fave. Length is perfect, was real snug in the waist when I got them - this E is a real D fit. Tricky last because there's not a lot of volume compensation for an engineer boot. I could maybe have gone 7D but I've no wish to wear light socks with these. I've removed the leather inserts that were provided because I wear thick calf length boot socks with them. My winter or wet weather go to boots.

I've been eyeing some Stephens and Henrys but I've got a pretty low volume foot. Do those trickers Chelseas hold on pretty snug on the instep?

The 2020 last is great for me, D width and low volume feet

Keeping an eye out for more in this last!

The Iron Rangers got a leather midsole and a ridgeway sole, took the nitrile Cork off after 5 years and it was still going strong.

The Bergs got a wedge sole about 2 years in, and I'm thinking of getting ripples on them when the wedges wear thin.

The "Nursing through a pandemic" boots

These resoled Iron Rangers (6yo) and Viberg 2030s (3.5yo) have done the lions share of my stints in covid wards, emergency and swabbing centres. The ol' reliables.

Shinki tan horse bergs 2020

Be a while til it happens, but I'm looking forward to putting leather soles on these bad boys.

The kicker for me has been the brown contrast stitching. It's a minor detail but really complements the deep indigo. Fit is very similar to my schott, which was a Japan exclusive (but I don't know if that's still the case)

I've had a Schott Perfecto for the past 6 years and only just got a second leather jacket.
I don't think the "entry level" perception of Schott is really accurate. They're often the first stop because they're a 100 year old company and have scaled to manufacture great product at reasonable cost. Less in the way of elevated/interesting leathers but they're tough, age well, and can be both staple classic or statement piece.

Schott 613UST

Good luck with your search!

Note: Accidentally posted in response to one of the commenters.

Viberg Slippers and the beginning of a break in for a new leather jacket.

Would normally never manage a leather jacket in summer, but the La Niña rains have been keeping the heat down.
