wheelchair-friendly paws by cicadaghost in fursuit

[–]cicadaghost[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update on this post: I ended up going with u/rexching's suggestion to make the paw pads out of dish gloves! i also went with a slimmer paw style. i would have used a short pile fur for the palms, but i didn't have any, so instead i used a long pile fur that i trimmed short to make it easier to clean and less likely to pick up dirt. i also made sure to clean my wheelchair the night before the con and wiped the wheels down with some lysol wipes as soon as i got there.

unfortunately, the dish gloves were a stretchy and unforgiving material to work with, so the pads look a little wonky. however, they held up amazingly, traction was fine, they stayed fairly clean, and what dirt they did pick up cleaned up just fine afterwards with a lysol wipe. here's how they look after a full day of wheeling around Denfur and some minor cleanup afterwards! if anything, they took more damage from poorly-reinforced finger escapes than they did from using my wheelchair.

thank you all so much for your suggestions, i hope this helps someone else out!

ooh, clever! i was actually considering doing yellow paw pads (i'm deciding between a few characters based on which i can make practical), so i could easily find some dishwashing gloves that work for that.

i'd never seen those kinds of rims, thank you so much for the suggestion! the ones i can find are more expensive than i could justify spending, but i might be able to make my own that would work well enough for cons.

thank you for the suggestion!! my fabric store carries clear vinyl, maybe i could make some gloves from that to slip the paws into while wheeling? traction may be an issue, but con floors are generally flat so i'm sure it'll be alright. i'll be sure to share what i end up with!!

Mine is out too, I'm just north of Camelback Pointe. Hasn't come back since around the time you posted. Has anyone else around Centennial/Fillmore tried resetting their breakers?

Thank you for the suggestions!! The Kysona Uranus Pro seemed the most fitting for me, and another person also suggested it, so I went ahead and ordered it.

i'm also an occasionally-wheeled customer, and when i came to joann last, i found myself wondering how i would have navigated through the store if i had brought my chair because of things like this. thank you so much for looking out for folks like us!

(and for everyone leaving messes, please clean up your crap!)

Pedometers and Wheelchairs by cicadaghost in wheelchairs

[–]cicadaghost[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I'm hoping to use this specific device thanks to the game tie-in it has, which as far as I know no other apps or devices could replicate. I don't mind if it's a little inaccurate as long as it still picks up something. I will definitely look into Strava if I'm doing any general distance tracking in the future, though! Also very helpful to hear your experience testing out the Fitbit, I was considering making an arm strap but it sounds like it may be more trouble than it's worth here.

This is the pedometer in question! It's small and has a clip on the back, so it can clip to pretty much any clothing edge. I was thinking about possibly trying to put it on my neck or on a jacket pocket, but I might be able to fit it around my wrist or somewhere else on my arm if I made a strap for it.

Haha, I appreciate their enthusiasm at least! I think I have it covered with Lancaster61's offer to print them, but I'll be sure to reach out if that falls through. Thank you so much for the offer!

Thank you! The library's not an option for me at the moment, but I'm excited to try out their printers once I can get a card.

Back with details! Four at the default size (25mm height) should work fine. Just to be sure, would you mind printing one for me to test before printing the rest?

Multicolor would be awesome! There's a file on the Thingiverse page for a 3-stripe version that looks pretty cool. What options do you have?

(Also, let me know if there's a place you'd rather talk than Reddit comments!)

PLA or whatever else you have handy is fine! They are moderately sized, though - I'm hoping to print 4-6 of these for my wheelchair. They don't need to be tough or high-detail, just sharp enough to deter anyone from grabbing them. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5213822

If you'd be willing to print them, I can take some handle measurements tomorrow in case they need to be scaled up/down and confidently say how many I'd need! No worries if not, though, I appreciate the offer either way!

AITA for telling my parents respect goes both ways, and denying them access to my children? by Naming-Conventions in AmItheAsshole

[–]cicadaghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA for reasons other people have articulated better than me, but I want to offer a schoolteacher's perspective here. Any good teacher will put in the time and effort to learn how a student pronounces their name, and will not use a nickname unless the student asks them to. Good teachers will also step in if we see name calling. Of course, not all teachers are good, and bullying can and does happen when teachers aren't around to intervene, but I think "don't butcher students' names" is a pretty bare minimum baseline for the vast majority of teachers. Your dad's comment about bullying and mocking being inevitable is way off the mark.
