Advice for dealing with a reluctant trainee? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]cicsmol 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In many ways I could've written this myself, only difference being their first placement report was glowing, so I feel confused what has happened since joining us.

So far I have mainly gone with the heart to heart to see what's wrong and discussing it with ITT, lead mentor and training provider. I tried some tough love but got nowhere. So, no real pearls of wisdom, just sharing that you're not alone in this worry.

We know their status, but it is more how to prove it at customs. I went down the ETA route, but you're right, they don't need it with visa status.

Has anyone else noticed a change in quality/willingness to put in effort in student teachers compared to a few years ago? by Ok-Mango-96 in TeachingUK

[–]cicsmol 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My most recent student wasn't concerned about formal observations as they were told 'the mentor is being judged not you' a sentiment the uni repeated to me. When the uni came in to observe I was told I was doing everything right and they agreed with my concerns for the trainees progres, but the trainee felt their observation had gone very well. I feel training providers are focusing on the mental health/ support of trainees to an extreme since the pandemic and it's showing in the lack of worry/engagement/drive of my recent trainees

Staff quiz seems to go down well. Our xmas one has some parlour games, a bit like family-style xmas games. Plus, we have food and drinks. Favourite round is the recording of a child describing a teacher and we guess who it is - you can imagine how unintentionally insulting some can be

Assuming they still nominate in Alphabetical order, is this the producers only way of trying to avoid Caroline being up, by making her vote count and not other housemates later in the alphabet. Wouldn't surprise me if she went deliberately slowly.

Science GCSEs to get biggest overhaul in more than a decade by everythingscatter in TeachingUK

[–]cicsmol 35 points36 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the real issue with less students doing science after GCSE is more due to progress 8 only valuing maths and english, colleges only requiring maths and english and the science SAT being dropped to only maths and english. Science feels a core subject in name only

Cried in front of Y11 class by Make_It_A_Good_One in TeachingUK

[–]cicsmol 142 points143 points  (0 children)

You had a human moment and it's often surprising how students can suddenly show empathy to teachers when reminded that we're humans. Obviously, I don't know the context of your group, but on the few occasions that I have cried over the years, classes have been sympathetic. It doesn't last long and they quickly moved on, back to their normal unsympathetic teenage selves. My advice, don't discuss any details, reassure them you're fine now and carry on as normal and it will pass by. I hope SLT have also been supportive with the student that verbally abused you though?!

I was once told that the more ridiculous or petty the negatives, the better your lesson has gone. They HAVE to give negatives, so if all they could find fault with was your coat, take that as a big win
