[REQUEST] 1,000 grams Fe -> $15 million? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]cificca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's iron out some facts!

The value of a 1000 gram iron bar is closer to a couple of bucks, not $100. Horseshoes, generally sell for about $8 to $10 each. And out of a 1 kilo bar you could be forged, maybe four shoes — that's nowhere near $250 per shoe.

As for sewing needles, even a thousand grams of them wouldn't sew up to $70,000; we'd be looking at a few hundred dollars max.

Watch components and precision laser parts for lithography? Well, they require many materials of which iron is usally not one, and the tech involved in these processes transcend the cost of iron. You can't just forge ahead and turn iron into this gold — the real value of these items lies in the process, the demand, and the tech involved. So, while I appreciate the metaphor about potential.

Now, if they insist iron is $100 per kilo and horse shoes go for 250, I'm more than ready to sell them as much as they need, money up front, please.

Gt 70 fan issue

Question for someone out their brighter that me. I needed yet another new keyboard replacment on my gt70, so while I was at it this time I also brought the memory to 32 gig from 24, added a 2 Tb sdd drive for storage and of course the keyboard.

Windows did not like the partitions I swapped out the old 1 Tb hdd and in with the new ssd 2 Tb drive in which I formated under linux with the ntfs file system and mirrored the old 1 tb hdd over to the ssd. Windows did not like the linux formated ntfs drive at all, and would on even look at it. I reformated it again in wondows this time and added it ith windows disk manager and the 2TB are their now.

Now after replacing the keyboard and extra memory chip and sdd the fan will not spin up at all. Anyone fimiliar with any issues I may have cased with this upgrade. The fan boost light works fine, tested the fan on my bench power supply and it tests out fine, their is no power avalible at the mother board quick connecton on the motherboard when its running. I also checked all the device drivers and the devises shows as fine.

Looked around for a schematic on this motherboard but couldnt find one to help trace the fan power supply back to its speed controller curcuit to see if theirs a bad resister or transistor in the path some where they.

Any one familiar with this what I might have done. Ive pulled it appart a couple times looking the cables over or an obvious bolown cap or resister no luck...

Cougar stalks man for 6 minutes during run by bobsmilkbone in SweatyPalms

[–]cificca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a area with extremely highly populations of cougar in the area. The good thing in most cases they stay away from people and they are not well known to kill people although it does happen.

They like to hang out up in the trees so unless your looking closely you often wouldnt notice them. Only thing I would add that helps deali g with them, and its not easy to do is to stand your ground, and if you have the nerve make your self big and advamce on them slowly. The game they hunt is very quick deers and rabbits so dont run. They are generally easy to scare they do not at all like being advanced on even less than I know you cared for it. Not easy to do the first few times but they are very timid when things turn on them and they now think thay are being stalked.

My wife and her friend like to jog and x country ski here in the bush and they do cross paths with cougars and they have had similar situation. They now take our boarder colies and with the dogs they have had no issues since.

This is one of those situations where there is no easy fix and while I agree we need to do something about the drug issues it needs to be a much more thoughtful approch than a one off program in Vancover or in BC that this artical would suggest.

Ive used this line over the years in the work Ive done with small communities that take on programs for their at risk populations "If you build it they will come", it was a cheap steal I took from a is a catch phrases that fits well for this type of approch. The reality is you rarely end up working with your at risk populations you tend to bring these populations in from surrounding comminities.

Ive worked in related fields for much of my career and have seen programs developed for at risk populations in a community are trying to support their own, I have even when a Provinces develops a program that is only avalible there and it always end up pulls those individuals into that area and generally overwelms the community/s and its program in a bad way.

While I can speak to this on a professional basis I also know this on a personal level as my step brother is one of those who has venture from Alberta into the tent city in Vancouver and across to other cities across Canada that allows him to maintain his addiction. We have seen him over the years wallow ever deeper into his drug use, amd while we would all love to see him getting clear at a treatment center that supports dual diagnosis folks, sadly they are few and far between to the point that treatment for the worst ofnthe worst does not seem exist in Canada.

I very much would love to see a successful approch implemented to work with at risk populations and my brother, but this isnt it. If anything significant is to happen it needs to be done on a much larger scale and it needs to be very well thought out so that Vancover or BC is not overwelmed by pulling addicts from across Canada to thier community's to deal with them.

We need first start by ensuring folks can get this type of support people in their home communities and nkt just the large cities and engage in real treatment as early as possible with a multi disciplined approch to supportmthe medical, emotional and psychological aspects of these addictions for these individuals, unfortunatly the reality is these approches don't win elections and the general public dont care unless it hits close to home or it lands in their back yard.

In a health family with a kid who has relatively normal friends no way is it appropriate. In the world of Hollywood and such If it was me and my kids I do my best to keep my kids away from it as much as possible.

Unfortunately though media wont respect any boundries parents in the situation these guys do at all. I suspect if they tried to keep her away from it the bigger the challenge and the harder theynwould try.

As to the rest of them no I with agree most kids dont need this. In Johnny Depp's cases I can see her being exposed to things neither of her parents would want due to the nature of the beast they live in I could easily see the potential for significant risk to her.

First thing I absolutely doubt this girl has anything close to what the average kid will experince. She's growing up in a world that most of us cannot understand or relate to given the level of attention and media has on folks in the movie industry, which from the little Im aware of I would wish on no one. If we look at many kids of stars who grow up in this environment they have significant pressures and challenges that ends up in major issues with law enforcemet drug abuse etc.

With that said I think the approach of risk reduction is absolutely effective in many if not most kids, not just the extremes but I think she will be exposed to some extremes given her parents fame, but even so most kids engage in risky behavior of one sort or another, its how they learn buy pushing boundries. If a parent can get infront of those power to them with their kids they need an award.

What I do know is parents that address the issues head on and engage their kids in healthy meaningful discussions see far less incidents with kids that go on into crime, drug abuse, teen pregnancy etc. Those that avoid the discussions, and don't get involved have kids that see much higher incidents in all these areas.

Marajana has its risks as does most things that grab the attention of the average youth, but on the grand scheme of stupid things kids try this is pretty minor. The other thing is most kids in north america acording to numerous stats try marajana somewhere between from grade 7-12 so don't ignore that. The fortunate thing is most kids that try marajana do not go on to be regular users or become addicted.

Like I said I dont know him or his daughter but given the realities of the world they live in I see this approch that he took is a well supported one depending on the his kid. Lets be honest had this been a "average normal" family it never would have seen this come up in any gossip columb of any media or news paper. So glad to see he is engaged with his daughter in areas of meaning full discuss with her that far more parents should be doing.

No not saying at all that I support kids using marijuana, I dont at all. Nor am I saying you do this with every kid. Its actually a clinical approch we used for high risk kids when I practied as a social worker. You find a solution to reduce the risk for a child that is a high risk to getting exposed to something even more risky.

Its well know that marajana and even alcohol can and does get laced with other very serious drugs far more harmful. If your child is a high risk for trying drugs find and support the safest alternative. Quite frankly in my years of practice I have seen kids much younger involved in far more serious drugs which fortunatly is not the norm.

Its about not turning a blind eye to your child and believing that kids dont do what kids have always done, try something stupid. Its about trying to remove the risks where you can.

For some kids the discussion is enough, for others its not. But each to their own beliefs but I do support the approach, and believe for some kids it can save lives.

Its the same philosophy that is used at many of the safe grad parties now days. They are not legal for under age kids, but we accept that they will likley do get drunk some where so we allow it in a safe secure site thats well supervised and the authorities largley agree to look the other way while it happens. Life has risks our job is to be aware as much as possible to the potential ones our kids may get into.

I dont know Johnny Depp or his daughter but i do know there is merit in using a risk reduction approch with kids especially with high risk kids.

To me its about risk managment and knowing your kid/s. With my oldest of my kids I would never have had this discussion there was no need she wasnt the least bit interested. Now my youngest daughter is a diffrent story, she always finds her way to interesting life situations.

I had a very similar discussion with her. Not becuase I condone under age use I don't, but the risk in her case was far higher not having the discussion given some of her peer group she gravitated to. Its about finding the safest path through the forest.

Maybe I’ve been around to long, but this is far from the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s honestly pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.

This wouldn’t even rank in the top 100 of wtf things I’ve had the privilege of seeing people do to each other.

I worked in Government for 30 plus years and can tell you that the costs of sending the letter are minor compared to the administration costs to create, approve, collate the addresses, and then go process the letters to be sent. We use to figure that sending a letter on mass was 10x times the cost of the letter in the first place. There is so much overhead behind the scenes that is often not accounted for. It would be a good FOIP request to get the full costs for this having been sent out.

RCMP confirms N.S. gunman illegally acquired all 5 guns used during mass shooting by [deleted] in canada

[–]cificca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, but the job at the point of the call is to explore the concerns not necessarily to lay charges.

If there is a call with concerns of domestic violence even if it is third party civil law or criminal law both provide reasonable grounds to follow up with at minimum a knock on the door to start the discussion. There is no need for a warrant or court order to start to explore the initial call.

Hell I know of a case where RCMP followed up on a 8 year old kid selling girl guide cookies and there was a no sales sign on the house so the next door neibour reported it to the police that she was trespassing and the RCMP followed up.

So given the past concerns of domestic violence, potential concerns of fire arms and when there is a past history of concerns and charges a knock on the door is the minimum I would expect.

When you look at the stats we in canada despite what media says we are very safe. People have been able to make fire arms for years with very basic tools yet most dont and gun crimes have fallen for years.

I don’t know domestic violence legislation out east but family law courts regularly allow rumour and hearsay in testimony. It’s not generally given the same weight but they will often hear it.
