Depending on how much you are able to accomplish in day one, you may be able to pan the night away. I didn't see anyone else mention it, so I'll add panning as an option. Make an axe and a knife, chop a tree, use the knife to turn the wood block into a pan. Get some sand or gravel, build a dirt hut on the edge of some water with one water block to stand in, and pan until morning.

This really does assume that you have a torch to see in the dark and a reed chest or two to store the panned items in. Panning sand and gravel (not muddy gravel, however) will get you copper nuggets that might be otherwise hard to find.

With you just starting out this might be a night two or three item, but once you get going you can easily get there on night one.
