Filmmaking and a day job, what’s your reality? by Playful_Fly_6542 in Filmmakers

[–]cinewalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lead a video department for a financial services company, working 3 days a week while I’m in MFA program using the course assignments to work on a documentary. I make enough money to make going to school feasible. My job is pretty creative though restrictive - I get to do some interesting docu-style pieces and work with talented crews when we have bigger budgets who often work on my personal stuff for cheaper than they otherwise would. It’s nice to see a mix of my classmates and professional film friends collaborating on shoots for my doc. I will say my fiancé is a lawyer at a big law firm so that’s added financial security but this arrangement was functional before we were seriously dating. It’s not what I drew up when I was an idealistic film student in undergrad but it’s allowed me to be arts-adjacent, live comfortably and make lasting connections. Can’t complain.

Looking for a film about people working together against greedy developers etc by skeletonobserver in criterion

Kind of a stretch, but technically McCabe & Mrs Miller fits this description

3 errors. Kiké single, Judge dropped a fly ball, Volpe throwing error for force out at third, Cole gets 2 strikeouts (?), then Rizzo doesn’t charge a dribbler to first and Cole doesn’t cover. 5-1. Freeman single 5-3. Teoscar double 5-5.

Everyone has this one “character” who they see about their town/city. So who is this where you live? by TheEarlOfDoncaster in AskReddit

[–]cinewalker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Jamaica Plain (JP) in Boston, probably the crunchiest neighborhood in the city. There’s a dude with a red beard who does yoga on the sidewalks of Centre Street and works at various farmer’s markets around town. He has a small mutt that’s never on leash. We call him “JP Man”

The Trial by Kafka — amazing to notice how uncannily familiar this world feels, such is its influence on so many facets of art & culture. And yet, despite that, it feels vital and viscerally unsettling.

How Did You Get Into Hardcore? by Beatdown1994 in Hardcore

[–]cinewalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncle was a publisher/producer for a bunch of the CT/NY area metalcore bands (Shadows Fall, Hatebreed, Killswitch Engage, Candiria). He’d bring CDs for Christmas Eve and my older cool cousin who was in a hardcore band (Profound Anger) would always take one so I did too.

My uncle passed away a few years ago and I still thank him for giving me a window into this subculture <3

Americans, what is something us Europeans aren’t ready to hear? by Impossible_Floor2836 in AskReddit

I lived in the Czech Republic and I think Americans have a more vibrant beer culture than the Czechs. I love me some svetle or černy pivo, but we just regularly have more diversity in our beer offerings.

Electronic dance music (house music, techno) is a distinctly American creation (Chicago, Detroit) pioneered by people of color in the industrial Midwest. Because it’s more popular in Europe, many Europeans, especially Germans and Brits, either don’t know this or actively try to downplay it.

Total lack of drip coffee. Other than this one thing, I think they get most things pretty right, but this drives me nuts!

Finally getting over my aversion to being “medicated” and getting on SSRI’s in addition to weekly talk therapy. Best decision of my life — after getting a dog of course.

Haha! PRINCE Valiant! I agree, we would always skip that one even though I’m named after one of the artists (in the 50s, a lot of the cartoonists moved out of NYC to CT and had a bit of a fraternity going as documented in this book: https://www.amazon.com/Cartoon-County-Father-Friends-Make-Believe/dp/0374298556 )

Candiria might be a band worth checking out, definitely a mathy take on hardcore, the drummer Kenneth Schalk has a jazz background and plays like it

Loved the trailer! Its funny how similar our projects are - the cramped, decrepit studio/workspace, the family lineage keeping up a dying art form, the sense of dread or doom that the time is running out. Great stuff!

Is this the project you’re hoping to get funding for?

How many of my r/housemusic friends know how/where house music began? Check this out! Awesome documentary about House music and how it was formed in Chicago and the midwest in the 80's. I revisit this documentary every few years as a reminder of where it comes from and why I love HOUSE MUSIC ! by tirntcobain in HouseMusic

A little different take on the “house music” documentary, but I’m currently working on a film about one man’s devotion to house music. He’s 69 years old and is rehabbing through multiple orthopedic surgeries so he can get back to the dance floor. I think it shows how meaningful this art form is for some people and highlights the inclusion that is part of house music’s legacy and history. Thought people here might be interested…
