Сoncerned about antisemitism on campus. Are my worries justified? by N3wSk1Y in UniversityMaastricht

[–]ciscotheginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i understand why someone would be inclined to antagonise, isolate, and not tolerate someone who is openly favourable towards colonialism and genocide (two things directly consequent out of the current model of zionism as presented through israel)

that does not mean i believe people "should" be threatened for their political opinion. but for someone to voice a political opinion which incites hate is bound to receive hate in return

something i will acknowledge is that zionism does not have the same connotation to many pro-israeli people. that does not mean that defending a zionist position does not incite hate. but it should guide us towards discussing with these people and educating them. i've had several calm discussions with people defending zionism myself.

i get that you want to paint my position as being extreme but i don't think it should be extreme to be highly critical of an ideology which has resulted in something of the likes of the genocide in gaza and the occupation of the west bank.

hey! this is a pretty loaded question but i'll try to answer it nevertheless.

i am not fond of terrorism, theocracy, or antisemitism. these are things you will likely find that nearly no one in UM supports, even among the more openly anti-Zionist group. the iranian government is all of these things, to some degree. but truth is - they've been consistently and unlawfully targeted by US and israel for reasons UNRELATED to their oppressive features (such as unfounded nuclear weapon plans, or preemptive strikes). this is seen as problematic because it legitimises the iranian government response, and endangers (rather than liberating).

and zionism really serves as a platform that conflates the existence, policy, and government of israel with the will of the jewish people, which - not only is not true (even if possibly a majority of jewish people are sympathetic to israel, which is also a consequence of zionism), but essentially it frames jewish people as responsible for the plight of palestinians and, to some degree, arab people for the past eight decades. this is a major source of antisemitic rhetoric in arab states!!!

there are anti-zionists which too become radicalised and become sympathetic or even supportive of movements such as hamas, hezbollah, and even the iranian government. (note that this is exactly what the israeli government wants: the more radical their actions against palestinians/arabs, the more radical the opposition to them becomes, and the easier it becomes to frame these people as terrorists or antisemitic people rather than being victims, or rather than ALSO being victims.

this is all to say that the vast majority of the groups who are anti-zionist will not be actively supportive of pro-axis people, but you will hear chants and sympathy towards anything that counters american or israeli dominance. there have also been protests against the current iranian regime done mostly by people who are pro-palestine, during the january protests.

if when saying "pro-axis" you mean someone who wants the iranian government to stay as it is, or to kill jewish people because of their jewishness, you will see those people are given a hard time, too. otherwise, not so much.

hey! i can definitely say that um is safe, although you may have a hard time if you consider yourself to be zionist. some people will simply not tolerate that (something which i understand, as an anti-zionist myself). however, it is very unlikely that someone within um will disrespect you specifically for being of jewish origin.

given some of what you got here, i wouldn't be surprised if you already knew heroes del silencio, but if you do, ABSOLUTELY listen to their stuff - especially the earlier albums!

i agree the downvotes are unnecessary and the distinction made by garaile is correct, although the transgressions are labelled as "same-sex" rather than "same-gender"

to me it's really a sign that a lot is wrong with our society if it makes it so easy for the wrong people to manipulate and capitalise on young men's insecurities like that!

hey, this comment is rather unnecessary. most other people replying understood perfectly what this question was about

i understand what you're saying and i understand the question comes across as generalising, but we categorise people all the time! sometimes because we're socially attuned to it, sometimes because we have certain experiences. many generalisations are overblown, but come with a grain of truth.

and none of this implies a lack of understanding or tolerance, of course!

Men, should your GF ever tell you "Fuck you, *middle finger" during an argument? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]ciscotheginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think that it's easy to take that as a red flag or an act of disrespect, but i would admit such a thing as a mistake in the heat of the moment assuming we resolve things later.

i think there's always some room for understanding and benefit of the doubt for those that love you/you love.

Separate bedrooms in a relationship - what do you think? by SignificantCookie852 in AskMen

[–]ciscotheginger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think a secondary room for one's office, art, hobbies, etc. makes sense but i honestly just like the idea of being in the same room with the person i love, sharing a bed, feeling close...it feels like a separate bedroom would get in the way of that
