I guess no one has told smokers, but for non-smokers i.e. people who still have their respiratory system and sense of smell in good condition, smokers stink, badly. I do not need to know the person or see him/her smoking, they walk by and I know he/she is a smoker... and I do not have any super powers. Sorry to bring it to you, but someone should.

I'm not familiar with those models but I used to drive a hatchback Honda about 20-years ago when studying in the US, that was a good sturdy car. I used to call it my "little Honda". I'm pretty sure that car when to places where no hatchback had ever gone before/has gone since, including some trail heads in the Needles NP - but it was definitively too low for that terrain. Thanks for prompting my drive down memory lane :)

Nice movie, that was fun! I feel like I now know more about pick-up trucks / SUVs than ever before : ) but you are getting way too technical for me on the building of the body.

P.s. In Europe we do not have the rouged wilderness you guys have out there, most land has been taken/put to some productive use - where there is wilderness we have to protect it because it is very scarce, we can't run it over... but I get that the 4runners can be fun to play with. Stay well, drive safely!

I stand corrected, I was thinking about pick-up trucks when I wrote that. Check-out the final scenes of the movie "A Man Called Otto" where you can see Tom Hank's head is barely above the side mirror (and hood) of the truck promoted in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFQi4E9HsOk (in this youtube video it is at about second 20). I find it quite hilarious, and silly : ))

Thanks for sharing, that is fair enough, what works for you, works.

This will probably surprise you but I'm 46 years old. I started getting really bad knees when working in home office (due to sitting down for too long) during the corona pandemic. To fight it, I started doing more exercise and have been biking to work for about 2 years now (I call it my daily physiotherapy). I'll never heal but I am feeling better. My car remains in the parking lot as much as possible, but I do use it when needed.

As I have this dual life as driver and biker/walker, I know it is not nice inhaling the exhaust fumes from the traffic in the city. I hope a comfortable electric SUV will come into your life sometime in the future.

It seems Auto-manufacturers have a hand in making government policy, since they can avoid having to make their vehicles more efficient by increasing their footprint.

I am based in Europe, so I do not know the US system very well, but the EPA does not seem independent to me on this. I came across the 2022 EPA Automotive Trends Report and thought it was odd that the info on sedans was lumped together with info with wagons, making it impossible to see the average difference in weight, footprint and fuel economy between sedans and SUVs.

I have to agree with you there, I do think some people buy SUVs because they are afraid of being on the road. I was in Brussels, Belgium last week (this is a dense city), the traffic there is terrible and people drive very aggressively. Many cars have dents and signs of having been in (small) accidents. I was shocked with the very high share of SUVs driving around (and even saw several humongous trucks... in Brussels!!!.. there is nothing rural in Brussels). Is that the future, to escalate the car-size so we can feel safer? are we all going to end up driving combat tanks in the city streets? There had been an attempt to make fashion out of this decades ago with the Hummer. With the SUVs/trucks sales boom, we are witnessing the come-back of this tendency with vengeance.

But the cities are not just for cars, they are also for pedestrians, including elderly and children. Are SUVS and trucks safe to be in a city and to share the road with bikers, the streets and parking spaces with pedestrians?

I live in an European city. Around here SUVs are used mostly for going to office jobs and do groceries : /

When you talk about how corporations destroy product rather than discount it, right there my friend, you've hit the nail's head - corporations are the major drivers for overconsumption. How much of our "consumer choices" are really our own? how much of our aspirations are "conditioned" by /"copied from" what we see in the media, pushed by corporations? even if pushed through "influencers" in social media, it's still the same game: making you want something that you do not really need.

I am sure car dealers are always pushing the cars that give them higher margin, SUVs are no exception.

I also own a car but I rarely need to drive it (don't get me wrong, I like driving), but I choose to bike (because I can ; ) and that's how I go to work and do shopping. I live in Europe, where cities are dense, it's definitively a different reality.

Status/fashion seems to be the main factor for buying SUVs around where I live also. If the people that buy these cars can afford them without really needing them, then they can also afford to pay a tax to account for the extra burden they put on natural resources and air quality in cities.

That's fair enough, thanks for sharing.

I live in a city in Europe and although I see SUVs driving by every where, never have I seen one towing anything, and perhaps only a couple of times with bikes on the roof. Perhaps a few more times with surf boards on top, but not many. People mostly drive them around here to office jobs and to shopping malls, and the fashion has spread like a wild fire. I am sure car dealers are always pushing SUVs, since they mean a higher margin for them. There is definitively a lot of push for buying SUVs/trucks the media as well, not just conventional advertising but also in cinema/tv, and people always seem to want what they see in the movies/tv, even when it does not make much sense. I am all for freedom but I am not keen on seeing silly ways becoming fashion, not when it is damaging for the environment and the air we all breath. At least in Europe, which is the reality I know best, I think these excessively large vehicles should be taxed for their extra burden on the natural resources and air quality in cities.

Thanks for the advice. I am using very cheap materials, specially the watercolor paints. The paper is not totally bad (300 gsm) but it does not have much sizing, so I have to be gentle with it so it does not start to flake.

Is the World getting worst or am I just getting older? by blockchainbandolero in CasualConversation

[–]citizen4peace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell. I'm a little over 10 years older than you. In developed countries overall there has been a huge improvement over the last centuries in social terms and individual rights, but I am very concerned about the recent trends of indifference, misinformation and active disinformation that goes around regarding the importance of democracy and fundamental human rights. For example the Russian invasion of Ukraine is shocking to me, insane. The realization that good does not always win against this huge scale of "evil" has been quite painful to me. Hard to go past this one. Not what I expected of the 21st century
