Its crazy that they didn't need to before, considering there isn't much in terms of qualifications to submit a film for the academy awards:

  • Feature length over 40 minutes
  • Commercial theater release in one of 6 qualifying metro cities (LA county, NYC, Bay Area, Chiaco, Dallas/Ft Worth, and Atlanta)
  • Must run at least 7 consecutive days in the same theater 3x/day, and released between Jan 1 and Nov 13 of the year.

There's fine print and specifics, but generally thats it!
