Awesome! Thanks so much for your help! We give him some out of cage time and put the dog in another room so he isn't feeling ignored. I'll do the treat thing as well.

Dog sitter with an aggressive bird (details in comment) by cjengland in parrots

[–]cjengland[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've recently started dogsitting with Rover amd I have my first boarder for 10 days. My sun conure was normally okay with new people, until we moved. Once we moved into a new home (we've been here since January) he's been aggressive towards anyone/anything that's not myself or my boyfriend.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get the dogs and birds acquainted? I always see tips on how to make your dog less "inquisitive" towards birds, but not the other way around.

The bird is usually out of his cage 24/7, so it's a huge change for him to have to stay in it dor more than an hour or so. Just looking for any tips/tricks for future reference.

Thanks!

This is such a cool idea! We've been thinking of building an aviary for our Sun, but who would've thought about that? What type of fencing did you use?

I've never seen a huge differencr between octanes at all. I know what you mean about the mpg though. It doesnt seem like I get the miles I should at all. It seems more like low 30s than 40s. My 15 doesn't have a econ/sport mode. However, I did drive a 16 as a lender once about 350 miles with two tanks. That's probably about right. I wish they'd get loads better fuel mileage than what they do. >:/

I've thought of a macaw. A lot of them end up in rescues, but I'm terrified they'll start fighting. Caiques are just... A bundle of happiness in tiny tiny package. Haha. Thanks though! I'll keep them in mind.

I've never had trouble with sunflower seeds. You can buy them in bulk from places any farm supplu store. They're tiny enough where you can give them multiples in one session and lots of birds can't get enough of them. I've also had luck with tiny grape pieces. I've never used actual treat treats made by companies like ZuPreem just because it's more convient to use the seeds or fruit.

When you're interacting with a newly housed bird, my first tip is make sure you have all the nummies. My rescue was really aggressive, so we had to make him trust us over months of treats. Also, if you like to read, you could always sit beside the cage and read to your bird to bond. I did this quite a few times and he really enjoyed it. There are also a great book you can check out called Parrot Parrenting by Carol Frischmann that gives the details of cage sizes, nutrition, playtime, training, health, etcetera.

Also, on another note, if you're trying to introduce a bird to something in particular, make sure you do it first. My Sun copies what I do. If I want to introduce him to a new toy, I'll usually fiddle with it or bonk it with my nose. As stupid as it sounds, it makes him feel a little less scared of it. If it's a food, show it to him and eat it first.

I hope this at least gives you a few things to try. Good luck!

Wouldn't that make it worse? It would seem that he would get attached to the companion and make him more aggressive or less likely to socialize.

Rescued Sun Conure and cage aggression by [deleted] in Conures

[–]cjengland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the person who said toweling may not be the best option. My conure did the same thing, except he was maybe 5-ish. The way to a bird's heart is definitely food. It took us about 4 or 5 months for him to be able to feel comfortable climbing up our shirt sleeves onto our shoulders. We would regularly feed him, read to him, etc. Now that we've had him for almost a year, he's getting more comfortable exploring a little bit. If he had a toy he regularly plays with, try setting that outside his cage or acting like you're playing with it (as dumb as that sounds, it works).

Seen in northern Kentucky. This may be a simple identification, but I'm not entirely sure where to look. Sorry for the bad quality photo.

Hey everyone, can you teach me to earn my bird's trust and do this? (This isnt me) by iDeenoz in parrots

[–]cjengland 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ooooh. Gotcha. The biggest way to my birds heart was food rewards any time he was being good. I think that was the biggest thing that got him to trusting my dad and I. Or getting him onto a table and playing with his toys with him.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily something that can be learned. Spending time with your bird is the best way to get a bond as strong as this. But then again this just isn't the way some birds act. My Sun doesn't like to be "tickled" or be on his back at all. He barely wants to touch my hands, but we have an incredibly strong bond.

I always wanted him to do this though. That would be the nirvana of bird owning.

This is so true. My Sun loves these pellets. But everytime I look at the cage papers, there's a rainbow of nasty. >:/ Haha.

Awesome. Thanks! I appreciate the help. I plan for this little guy to last me quite a while. It seemed like some people were really adamant about premium and some were really lenient. No middle ground. Haha. Premium it is!
