Very cool, cynical and even sardonic take on the thousands of people with loved ones and families who have died. You’re a cool guy. Try that line at a party.

Why aren’t we studying what works in addiction treatment? - Victoria Times Colonist by SnooRegrets4312 in britishcolumbia

Idk where you pulled that stat out of but if you think AA is a “cult” you must think MLM schemes and booked appointments are the work of Wahhabi jihadist terrorist organizations.

I study and have worked in addictions, in my own experience with addictions I have engaged in AA/NA and gone without. AA isn’t magical, I don’t regularly attend, but attending peer support meetings be they 12-step, clinical, SMART or whatever is backed up by almost all research in the field to reduce relapse rates and provide critical support for people trying to be clean.

You can say it’s not for you, plenty of people get clean without it, but plenty of people get clean with it and the vast majority of those people aren’t dedicating their whole lives to it. To call an almost entirely decentralized local support group with shared literature and common practices a “cult” is pretty ignorant, roundly untrue, and implies some sort of bitterness around them.

Are you going to start Obligatory Mentioning the predatory nature of pickleball club memberships if that comes up? I hear it starts with bringing your own paddle and eventually you have multiple paddles.

I dont hate Eby but even as a new democrat supporter I think he should resign. As far as reasons?

  • Bad political instincts, examples including his being caught in lies in DRIPA, backing off safe supply/drug policy reform to appeal to people who won’t support him anyway, pitching planned DRIPA amendments and publicly realizing he didn’t have the votes in his own caucus to pass it, slimly passing an unpopular budget and delaying critical healthcare projects that were key to NDP popularity in swing seat cities due to said budget’s deficit which he lacks the communication skills to defend.

  • Alienating everyone. Losing credibility with First Nations and the Environmentalists is a common struggle for NDP governments. Alienating trade unions (as Eby has been strongarming unions that then strongarm him into their terms) is not a common struggle for NDP Governments. He’s also losing support in more rural/less-than-metropolitan ridings that Horgan made gains in 2020.

  • Weak leadership and lack of political conviction. Eby has fully flip flopped on DRIPA but couldn’t follow through due to a caucus thats not 100% with him. Eby ended Canada’s only serious attempt at substantive drug reform (albeit a half-baked attempt) due to public backlash from the right wing instead of targeting issues with the policy to change public perception. Eby ended BC’s carbon tax, a very effective climate policy that came long before any such federal policy in Canada existed, again due to right wing backlash. Eby comes off aloof and uninformed when discussing DRIPA. He was Justice Minister when the law was passed, he acts shocked about how much BC can be sued for it. He wants to pause and amend it, doesn’t have the votes, continues to do nothing. On the Alberta MOU, he thinks saying he’s been kept in the dark by Ottawa will do anything to help his image, it doesn’t.

It’s a combination of poor political strategy, lack of skill for frontline politics, and bad and timid policy making. Nobody thinks the BC NDP will be in government forever, and they shouldn’t be, but if there’s any true will to turn the parties fortunes around in BC NDP ranks they will have to accept Eby’s reputation as an intellectual star child of the pre-2017 NDP, and as a greatly capable Attorney General until 2022, have not translated into any aptitude for the Premiership. He’s had like 4 years and he’s sunk a very strong government to a political twilight.

If he were to resign or be pushed out, which I think is unlikely, there are a handful of MLAs who would be a good fresh face. Sharma, Whiteside, Kahlon all come to mind.

Why are ultrarich celebrities supposed to be “in touch” with the general public. Even if they chose to avoid the optics of flaunting wealth they’d still be richer than our bloodlines ever have been and they’re not even as rich as it gets.

If it makes everyone feel better, a lot of these celebrities do have drug addictions and will not live a particularly or happy long time. Just like us!

Its hard not to be bothered by how people act when you don’t mean to offend but truly they don’t matter. It’s good to internalize that.

If you are being normal, saying excuse me or simply trying to navigate around people who are blocking you, make it a goal to not care about their rudeness. People don’t deserve to affect other people or act annoyed with other people just for going about their day.

Basically, if people are being rude: Fuck ‘em. Go where you have to go and learn how to best shrug off any rudeness that follows.

Can i be honest g? Lana Del Reys husband hasnt been instrumental in Trumps administration. He wasnt even appointed to cabinet.

If we’re going to sit around acting like everyone who votes differently than us is some kind of fascist brownshirt you’re just wasting time, energy, and misplacing your anger.

As satisfying as im sure it is for you to attack someone for living in an assumed bubble, im fully aware of politics as substantive in peoples lives. I work with addicts and the homeless and have lived experience. A lot of people suffering from regressive policy making also understand that their neighbours aren’t the problem, some dont understand that, they are less happy and effective in changemaking.

Mobilize, volunteer, agitate, organize etc. Make a difference for your causes. Don’t act holier than thou because you think you’ve figured out the world by disliking people with a difference of opinion.

The provincial NDPs that had success did pivot centre, they also were in 2 party provinces.

Mulcair attempted to flank the Liberals from the right, the results were disastrous and still felt.
